These Ancient Writings Are Among the Strongest Proofs Jesus Was Real

For Christians, faith in Jesus Christ is rooted not only in Sacred Scripture but also in the reality of history. While the Gospels remain the primary source for understanding the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, ancient non-Christian writers have also left behind remarkable testimony that supports His existence.

According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, historians continue to point to the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus and the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus as some of the strongest evidence outside the Bible that Jesus was a real historical figure.

The evidence was recently reviewed by biblical scholar Lawrence Mykytiuk in an examination of ancient Roman and Jewish sources, as reported by the Biblical Archaeology Society and cited by the Daily Mail.

Far from being Christian apologists, both Tacitus and Josephus wrote from outside the Christian faith. Historians note that this makes their testimony especially significant because neither author had a religious motive to support the claims of the early Church.

Tacitus, one of ancient Rome’s most respected historians, wrote around A.D. 116 in his work Annals. While describing Emperor Nero’s persecution of Christians following the Great Fire of Rome in A.D. 64, Tacitus explained the origin of the Christian movement.

According to the Daily Mail, Tacitus recorded that “Christus” had been executed during the reign of Emperor Tiberius by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea.

What makes Tacitus’ testimony particularly noteworthy is his hostility toward Christianity. Rather than praising Christians, Tacitus described their faith as a superstition and expressed contempt for its followers. Historians therefore argue that he had little reason to invent details favorable to Christianity.

His account independently confirms several key facts recorded in the Gospels: that Jesus lived in Judea, was executed under Roman authority, and that His followers continued spreading His teachings after His death.

Another important witness comes from Flavius Josephus, a first-century Jewish historian who was born only a few years after the Crucifixion.

In his historical work Jewish Antiquities, Josephus discussed the execution of James, a leader in the early Church. To identify which James he was referring to, Josephus described him as “the brother of Jesus-who-is-called-Messiah,” according to the Daily Mail.

Historians have long considered this reference significant because Jesus is not the subject of the passage. Instead, Josephus mentions Him almost incidentally, suggesting that his readers were already familiar with Jesus as a historical person.

Josephus also included another passage describing Jesus as a wise teacher who attracted followers. While scholars continue to debate whether later Christian copyists modified portions of that text, many conclude that the passage originated from an authentic reference to Jesus written by Josephus himself.

Taken together, the writings of Tacitus and Josephus provide valuable historical support for several facts widely accepted by scholars. According to the Daily Mail, these ancient sources indicate that Jesus existed as a real person, gathered followers in Judea, was executed under Pontius Pilate, and inspired a movement that spread rapidly throughout the Roman world.

Perhaps most telling is the observation that ancient critics of Christianity attacked Jesus on many grounds but rarely denied that He existed. According to the historical record cited by the Daily Mail, Jewish and pagan opponents accused Jesus of false teaching, deception, and even sorcery, yet virtually none argued that He was merely a fictional character.

For Catholics, historical evidence can never replace faith, which is ultimately a gift from God. Yet these ancient witnesses offer a compelling reminder that Christianity is rooted in real events, real places, and a real Person whose impact transformed history and continues to shape the world today.
