A Moral Crisis in Healthcare and the Urgent Need for Action

The United States is facing a dire physician shortage, and the consequences are life-threatening. As Catholics, we are called to care for the sick and advocate for just healthcare policies that protect the dignity of every human person. Yet, “Americans are increasingly waiting weeks or even months to get an appointment to see a healthcare specialist,” according to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). This crisis is growing at an alarming rate, especially as our population ages and demand for care intensifies.

The Struggle for Access to Healthcare

By 2050, the number of adults over 85 is expected to triple, further straining an already overwhelmed system. According to the NEJM report, “The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis projects a national shortage of 140,000 physicians by 2036.” This shortfall spans multiple specialties, including primary care, cardiology, and geriatrics, leaving some of the most vulnerable populations without adequate medical attention.

The shortage disproportionately affects rural areas, where the lack of physicians leads to worse health outcomes. “The brunt of the effect will be felt in rural areas: An estimated 56% shortage is predicted in nonmetro areas, versus only 6% in metro areas.” These statistics translate into real human suffering—longer wait times, fewer treatment options, and an increased burden on families and caregivers.

The Catholic Call to Action

The Catholic Church has long championed the dignity of the human person and the right to healthcare. As the Catechism teaches, “Concern for the health of its citizens requires that society help in the attainment of living conditions that allow them to grow and reach maturity: food and clothing, housing, health care, education, employment, and social assistance” (CCC 2288). The physician shortage presents a moral challenge that demands a response from Catholic leaders, healthcare professionals, and policymakers alike.
