Pope Leo XIV Tells Prisoners God Never Stops Loving Them and Offers Every Soul a New Beginning

Pope Leo XIV brought a message of hope, mercy, and redemption to inmates during a visit to the Brians 1 Penitential Center in Spain, reminding prisoners that neither their past mistakes nor their present circumstances can separate them from the love of God.

Speaking directly to those incarcerated, the Holy Father emphasized that every person remains loved by God and capable of beginning again, regardless of what they have done.

“To each of you I say: God loves you just as you are, but He dreams of you being even better!” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News. “The Lord allows us all to start anew, for being human and being Christian does not mean never making mistakes, but rather growing in the ability to convert, repent, make amends and, above all, to reconcile and forgive.”

The Pope stressed that God’s mercy is greater than human failures and that no one loses their dignity in the eyes of the Creator.

“Every human being is ‘worthy’ by the mere fact of having been willed, created and loved by God,” he said, according to Vatican News. “There is, therefore, no situation that causes the Lord to turn His gaze away from us.”

Acknowledging the unique suffering experienced by prisoners, particularly the pain of separation from family and loved ones, Pope Leo encouraged them not to surrender to despair.

“When you are tempted to feel inferior and think it is not worth going on,” he said, according to Vatican News, “lift up your eyes to the One who, through the presence of so many people, never ceases to show you His love and closeness.”

The pontiff also addressed the burden of regret and the fear that past mistakes permanently define a person’s future. Drawing on the writings of Saint Augustine, he reminded inmates that God’s grace can transform even the darkest chapters of life.

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo reflected on Saint Augustine’s teaching that the past does not have to determine what lies ahead. Instead, when people trust in God’s grace and allow themselves to be changed by it, they discover new opportunities for conversion and renewal.

The Pope urged the prisoners to seek Christ with confidence and to allow His love to guide their lives.

“Let us allow His love to guide us. Let us cling to Him, who continually invites us to hope,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News.

He reassured those gathered that God offers a future beyond the limits of any earthly circumstance, saying that no physical barrier can prevent a person from reaching the horizon that God opens before them.

The Holy Father concluded his visit by encouraging the inmates to embrace God’s plan for their lives and never stop hoping for renewal.

“I invite you to keep dreaming God’s dream and let Him start us anew,” he said, according to Vatican News.

Entrusting the prisoners to the care of Our Lady of Mercy, Pope Leo imparted his Apostolic Blessing, leaving them with a powerful reminder that God’s love remains present even in the most difficult moments and that every soul is capable of redemption through His grace.
