Pope Leo XIV is calling on Christians to defend the dignity of every human person, emphasizing that human worth is not earned through success, status, ability, or even good behavior, but comes directly from God.
During his Wednesday General Audience on Sept. 9, Pope Leo continued his catechesis on the Second Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, focusing on what the Church teaches about the human person and the dignity given to every person by God.
According to Vatican News, the Pope acknowledged the recognition of fundamental human rights as one of humanity’s significant achievements, while warning that the work of fully respecting human dignity remains unfinished.
At the heart of Catholic teaching is the conviction that dignity belongs to the person simply because of who that person is before God.
“Human dignity does not depend on a person’s abilities, wealth or position in life, nor on the right or wrong choices made,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News. “Instead, it is a gift that precedes and transcends each person, endowed by God as an expression of His unfailing love.”
The Pope connected this dignity to the biblical truth that human beings are created in the image of God. Every person is willed by God and called to communion with Him, with other people, and with creation.
Christ reveals even more clearly what it means to be human. Through Christ, humanity discovers both the foundation of its dignity and the greatness of the calling God has given it.
But human dignity is not meant to be understood only as an individual possession.
“To be a person means to perceive oneself as a gift to be shared, growing and maturing through acceptance, reciprocity and service,” Pope Leo said.
That understanding carries responsibilities. Respecting human dignity requires care for others, solidarity, personal responsibility, and resistance to attempts to manipulate or distort the meaning and value of the human person.
The Pope also addressed the Christian understanding of the human body. Drawing from Gaudium et Spes, he recalled that the human person, “though made of body and soul, is one.”
Because the body is part of the person created by God, it cannot rightly be reduced to an object to be used, manipulated, or disposed of according to individual desires. According to Vatican News, Pope Leo said the body should instead be recognized as good and worthy of honor because it was created by God and is destined for resurrection.
The Pope also identified intelligence, conscience, and freedom as important expressions of human dignity. Intelligence enables the pursuit of truth, conscience helps give unity and meaning to life, and authentic freedom allows people to accept responsibility for their choices.
Humanity’s wounds and divisions do not erase this God-given worth. Although sin has left the human person caught in the struggle between good and evil, Christians have reason for hope because Christ came to free, strengthen, and renew humanity.
Ultimately, the Christian understanding of dignity leads back to humanity’s relationship with God.
“Created in God’s image, through Christ and for His sake, we have received a unique and indelible dignity,” Pope Leo said. “Let us commit ourselves to promoting and defending it always.”
For Catholics, that call means recognizing the God-given worth of every human person—not only when it is convenient, but at every stage and in every circumstance of human life.
