Pope Leo XIV urged Catholics to deepen their participation in the Eucharist, describing the sacrament as a transformative encounter with Christ that teaches believers to live lives of self-giving love and unity.
Speaking during his Wednesday General Audience, the Holy Father continued his catechetical reflections on the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium. According to Vatican News, the Pope focused his remarks on the Eucharist and its central role in the spiritual life of the Church.
Drawing from the Council’s teaching, Pope Leo highlighted the Eucharist as “a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity,” and a sacred banquet in which Christ is received and the faithful are strengthened by grace.
The Pope emphasized that Catholics are not called to be mere observers at Mass. Instead, according to the Council’s vision, the faithful are invited to unite themselves to Christ’s sacrifice and offer their own lives to God.
“When we participate in the Eucharist,” the Pope explained, believers are called to listen attentively to the Word of God and receive nourishment from the Lord’s table, where Christ offers Himself to the Father. This participation, he noted, forms the foundation of the Christian spiritual sacrifice and strengthens communion with God and with one another.
Quoting Sacrosanctum Concilium, Pope Leo also recalled that the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist “are so closely connected with each other that they form but one single act of worship,” underscoring the unity of the Mass.
The Holy Father said the Eucharist shapes Christians into the likeness of Christ through the practice of self-giving love.
“By incorporating us into Christ, the Eucharist teaches us to adopt the very way of life of the Lord Jesus, marked by the free gift of self,” he said, according to Vatican News.
Pope Leo suggested that this sacramental reality offers a powerful response to the divisions and conflicts affecting society today.
“This gift,” he said, “introduces us into the dynamic of unity, which offers a powerful antidote to the forces of division that undermine our world, our communities, our families, and our hearts.”
Concluding his reflection, the Pope encouraged Catholics to draw strength from the Eucharist and allow the mystery they celebrate to transform their lives.
“Let us draw with faith from this source of divine life and allow ourselves to be transformed by the mystery we celebrate,” he said, according to Vatican News.
The Pope’s catechesis continued his broader examination of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and their relevance for the Church in the modern world, emphasizing that authentic participation in the liturgy leads believers to deeper communion with Christ and greater unity with one another.
