Pope Leo XIV is calling on society to recognize the irreplaceable importance of marriage and family, warning that protecting these fundamental institutions has become an increasingly urgent responsibility.
During his General Audience at St. Peter’s Square on October 21, 2026, the Holy Father emphasized that the strength of society depends upon the well-being of families, the faithful love of husbands and wives, and the protection of human life from conception.
According to Vatican News, the audience marked the Pope’s first Wednesday gathering with the faithful following his recent hospitalization and lung surgery. Pope Leo was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 17 after spending five days receiving medical care.
Before beginning his catechesis, the Holy Father expressed gratitude for the prayers offered during his recovery.
“The first thing I would like to say to you is: thank you! Thank you for the support of your prayers. Thanks be to God for His generosity. Let us all renew our trust in the goodness and mercy of God,” the Pope said, according to Vatican News.
A Warning About the Future of Marriage and Family
Returning to his ongoing reflections on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Leo turned his attention to Gaudium et Spes, the Council’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World.
The document, promulgated in 1965, addresses the relationship between the Church and contemporary society, including the essential role of marriage and family in human flourishing.
Pope Leo emphasized that families are not simply private relationships but communities whose health and stability affect the entire world.
Drawing from Gaudium et Spes, he described the family as “a school of deeper humanity” and “the foundation of society.”
He also stressed the responsibility of those in positions of influence, particularly in politics and culture, to support and strengthen marriage and family life.
“This task is more urgent than ever before,” the Pope declared.
His message underscored the Church’s longstanding teaching that the welfare of society cannot be separated from the welfare of families.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo also referenced a recent Vatican gathering commemorating the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia. The October 7–14 meeting brought together leaders of Eastern Churches and presidents of bishops’ conferences to reflect on the Church’s pastoral mission concerning marriage and family.
Marriage Is More Than Attraction
A central theme of the Pope’s catechesis was the Catholic understanding of marriage as a lifelong union grounded in love, fidelity, and mutual self-giving.
Reflecting on the teachings of Gaudium et Spes, Pope Leo described marriage as an “intimate partnership of married life and love.”
He explained that the marital bond goes far beyond physical attraction or temporary feelings. Rather, authentic married love requires the complete commitment of both spouses, expressed through their choices, affection, tenderness, and shared responsibilities.
“The mutual self-giving of man and woman, such that ‘they are no longer two but one flesh’, underlies the requirement for ‘total fidelity’ and the ‘unbreakable oneness’ of the spouses,” the Pope said.
He further emphasized that husbands and wives are called to love one another as Christ loves His Church.
The Holy Father also affirmed the equal dignity of men and women within marriage, describing their union as one in which both spouses freely give themselves to one another.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo explained that marital love encompasses the whole person and extends throughout the entirety of married life.
Children Are a Gift and Human Life Must Be Protected
The Pope also addressed the responsibility of married couples to welcome and nurture human life.
He emphasized that the gift of children is closely connected to the love shared between spouses and that parenthood carries a sacred responsibility.
“By transmitting and educating human life, which must never be rejected, spouses become ‘cooperators with the love of God the Creator, and are, so to speak, the interpreters of that love’,” Pope Leo said.
The Holy Father acknowledged the importance of responsible parenthood, explaining that couples must consider their own well-being and that of their children while allowing their decisions to be guided by sound judgment, prayer, and a conscience formed according to God’s law and the teachings of the Church.
He also reaffirmed the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of human life, stressing that “from the moment of its conception life must be guarded with the greatest care.”
According to Vatican News, the Pope explicitly reiterated the rejection of abortion and infanticide, while emphasizing the dignity of marital intimacy and the inseparable relationship between authentic conjugal love and the responsible transmission of life.
His remarks reflected the Catholic understanding that human life possesses inherent dignity from its very beginning and that marriage carries responsibilities extending beyond the individual desires of either spouse.
A Call to Strengthen Families Throughout the World
Pope Leo’s message placed the protection of marriage and family at the center of the Church’s concern for the modern world.
By drawing upon the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, he reminded the faithful that strong families contribute not only to the spiritual lives of their members but also to the stability and well-being of society as a whole.
His appeal extended beyond married couples and parents to those responsible for shaping public life, emphasizing the importance of creating conditions in which families can flourish.
The Holy Father concluded his catechesis by turning to the Holy Family of Nazareth, praying that it may “enlighten us on our journey and protect families throughout the world.”
As the Church continues to confront the challenges facing marriage, parenthood, and family life, Pope Leo XIV’s message offers a clear reminder of the enduring Catholic conviction that love, fidelity, and openness to life are essential to the future of society.
