Pope Leo XIV Calls Resource-Rich Nation to Build Justice, Peace, and Hope Through Christ

During his Apostolic Journey to Equatorial Guinea, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message urging Christians to actively shape a future rooted in justice, peace, and faith.

Celebrating Mass in the city of Mongomo, the Holy Father reflected on the deep spiritual hunger present not only in the nation but across the world. “There is hunger for a future imbued with hope that is capable of engendering a new sense of justice and producing fruits of peace and fraternity,” he said, according to Vatican News.

Rather than waiting passively for change, Pope Leo emphasized that Christians are called to actively participate in building that future. “This is not an unknown future that we must passively await, but rather one that we ourselves are called to build with God’s grace,” he said, according to Vatican News.

The Pope’s visit highlighted the long history of evangelization in the region, recalling the missionaries who first brought the Gospel to Equatorial Guinea over a century ago. Echoing the words of Pope Paul VI, he reminded the faithful that “Africans, from now on, you are missionaries to yourselves,” according to Vatican News. He praised those who have remained steadfast in faith, noting that “through the example of their lives… they have played their part in bringing about the Kingdom of God, unafraid of suffering for their fidelity to Christ.”

In his homily, Pope Leo called on believers to deepen their personal commitment to Christ through perseverance and sacrifice. “Such a commitment requires perseverance; it demands effort and, at times, sacrifice,” he said, according to Vatican News, adding that this dedication is a true sign of the Church’s presence in the world.

He also encouraged Christians facing hardship—whether persecution or personal struggles—to remain confident in God’s providence. Trust in the Lord, he said, enables believers to continue witnessing to the Gospel with joy and love.

Addressing the nation’s vast natural wealth, the Pope offered a moral challenge. While Equatorial Guinea is rich in resources, including oil, gas, and minerals, he stressed that these blessings must serve all people, not just a few. “May the Lord help you to become a society in which everyone… works ever more fully to serve the common good rather than private interests, bridging the gap between the privileged and the disadvantaged,” he said, according to Vatican News.

The Holy Father underscored the importance of protecting human dignity, urging citizens to make choices that safeguard “the life and dignity of every person,” according to Vatican News.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo XIV called on the faithful to take responsibility for their nation’s future by proclaiming the Gospel and living out Christ’s love in concrete ways. His words served as both a spiritual encouragement and a call to action: a reminder that true peace and justice begin with hearts transformed by God’s grace.
