Padre Pio Allegedly Knew the Third Secret of Fatima Years Before It Was Revealed

A renewed discussion surrounding the Third Secret of Fatima and the warnings it may contain about a crisis within the Church has emerged following a reflection by German priest Father Frank Unterhalt, who highlighted connections between the message of Fatima and the life of Saint Padre Pio.

According to Father Unterhalt, the famous Capuchin saint’s spirituality closely reflected the themes emphasized by Our Lady at Fatima: devotion to the Eucharist, prayer, sacrifice, repentance, and concern for the salvation of souls.

The article, published by LifeSiteNews, draws particular attention to claims made by the late exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth regarding conversations he allegedly had with Padre Pio decades ago. According to journalist José María Zavala, who interviewed Amorth for his 2017 book on the Third Secret of Fatima, Padre Pio reportedly expressed grave concerns about a future crisis in the Church.

Amorth recounted that Padre Pio once told him: “It is Satan who has been introduced into the bosom of the Church and within a very short time will come to rule a false church.” According to Zavala’s account, Amorth said that the prospect of a great apostasy within the Church was what most troubled Padre Pio.

The Third Secret of Fatima has remained a subject of debate among some Catholics for decades. While the Vatican published what it identified as the complete Third Secret in 2000, some commentators have continued to speculate about whether additional elements remain undisclosed or whether the prophecy has broader implications for the contemporary Church.

Father Unterhalt’s essay emphasizes themes that have long been associated with Fatima, including prayer, penance, Eucharistic devotion, and fidelity to Catholic teaching. He points to Padre Pio’s deep reverence for the Holy Mass, citing the saint’s well-known statement: “It would be easier for the earth to exist without the sun than without Holy Mass!”

The priest also highlights Padre Pio’s devotion to the Rosary, which he considered a powerful spiritual weapon. According to the essay, the saint frequently encouraged prayer and sacrifice for the conversion of sinners, echoing the requests made by the Blessed Virgin to the shepherd children at Fatima.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Padre Pio became renowned for spending long hours hearing confessions and calling souls to sincere repentance. Father Unterhalt argues that the saint’s emphasis on conversion remains particularly relevant amid modern challenges facing both society and the Church.

The essay concludes by expressing confidence in the ultimate triumph foretold at Fatima. Despite warnings of confusion, apostasy, and spiritual warfare, Father Unterhalt points to the promise associated with the apparitions: that the Immaculate Heart of Mary will ultimately prevail.

While the claims regarding Padre Pio’s knowledge of the Third Secret remain matters of private testimony rather than official Church teaching, the discussion continues to draw interest among Catholics seeking to understand the prophetic dimensions of Fatima and the ongoing call to prayer, repentance, and fidelity to Christ.
