Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has publicly affirmed belief in a Creator, offering his most explicit statements to date on the origin of the universe, according to LifeSiteNews.
During a recent interview with podcaster Katie Miller, Musk was asked, “Who do you look up to the most?” He responded simply, “The Creator.” When pressed further about his views on God, Musk repeated, “God is the creator,” according to LifeSiteNews.
When Miller challenged him by saying, “You don’t believe in God, though, do you?” Musk replied, “Well this universe came from something,” adding that “people have different labels,” according to the report.

While Musk has long stated that he is not religious, LifeSiteNews notes that he has expressed belief in a non-personal Creator for several years, aligning more closely with deism than with belief in a personal God. In a 2013 interview with actor Rainn Wilson, Musk said he was not “convinced there is some super-consciousness watching over our every move.”
“And it does beg the question, if there is some super-consciousness, where did the super-consciousness come from?” Musk said at the time, explaining his belief that “most likely, complexity evolved from simplicity,” according to LifeSiteNews. When asked whether he prayed, Musk responded, “I didn’t even pray when I almost died of malaria.”
LifeSiteNews reports that Musk appeared to signal a shift in late 2021 when he told the Babylon Bee, “As Einstein would say, ‘I believe in the God of Spinoza.’” Musk was referencing Albert Einstein’s well-known statement: “I believe in Spinoza’s God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with fates and actions of human beings.”
In a 2022 interview on the Full Send podcast, Musk again affirmed belief in a Creator, stating, “Something created the universe … You could say whatever caused the universe to be is God,” according to LifeSiteNews.
Earlier this year, Musk reiterated that his belief does not include a personal God who judges human behavior. He told German politician Alice Weidel that he rejected the idea of a God who is “observing our daily actions and rendering a moral verdict on what we’re doing from day to day.”
“That doesn’t appear to be the case because there’s some very evil things happening from day to day … but maybe that is the case, I don’t know,” Musk said. “As I learn more, I aspire to change my views to match what I learn,” according to LifeSiteNews.
The outlet also notes that Musk has publicly dismissed the idea of conforming to God’s moral law. In 2022, after being asked to confess belief in God before his “last heartbeat,” Musk replied, “Thank you for the blessing, but I’m ok with going to hell, if indeed that is my destination, since the vast majority of all humans ever born will be there.”
That same year, some Christians expressed concern after Musk appeared in a Halloween costume featuring a satanic baphomet image and an inverted cross, LifeSiteNews reported.
According to LifeSiteNews, Musk’s beliefs draw attention not only because of his influence and wealth but also because of his work on emerging technologies. His company Neuralink is developing a brain-computer interface, which Musk believes could eventually allow humans to communicate “telepathically,” a claim he made during a May 2020 appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast.
For Catholics, Musk’s statements highlight a growing cultural tendency to acknowledge a Creator while rejecting divine revelation, moral accountability, and the personal God revealed through Jesus Christ—an approach the Church has long distinguished from authentic faith in the living God.

James 2:19-23 When Mr. Musk states publicly, loud and clear that Jesus is Lord, then and only then will I even consider he has been touched to truly believe! That this website would so easily attempt to convince its patrons of this man’s conversion is more than a little troubling 🙁 I also have grave concern over this sites attempts to embrace AI and its evils! Didn’t our Lord warn clearly in Matt 24:24 of attempts being made to deceive even the elect if possible? Our faith leaders need to heed this warning while they are embracing AI and those in power who would have us believe they are true Christians. If they are of God then let them state the only truth in public out loud before Church leaders called by God to “Lead my sheep” attempt to lead them by this omission to slaughter!
