Could This Be Noah’s Ark? New Scientific Expedition Aims to Test Biblical Landmark

For centuries, Christians, historians, and archaeologists have wondered whether physical evidence of Noah’s Ark might still exist somewhere in the mountains of the ancient Ararat region described in Scripture. Now, a new scientific expedition in eastern Turkey hopes to bring fresh evidence to one of the Bible’s most enduring mysteries.

Researchers associated with Noah’s Ark Scans have announced that Turkish authorities have granted permits for what the team describes as the most extensive scientific investigation ever conducted at the Durupinar Formation, a boat-shaped geological feature located approximately 18 miles south of Mount Ararat.

According to the Daily Mail, the expedition will utilize non-destructive core drilling, advanced remote-sensing equipment, next-generation imaging technology, and an underground drone known as “Gopher” to examine what lies beneath the site.

The Durupinar Formation has attracted attention for decades because of its unusual shape and its location within the region traditionally associated with the biblical account of Noah’s Ark. Genesis records that after the Flood, the ark came to rest upon the “mountains of Ararat” (Genesis 8:4).

Researchers involved with the project claim previous ground-penetrating radar surveys revealed underground features that may not be consistent with a natural geological formation. Among the discoveries they cite are angular structures, hidden voids, and what they believe could be corridors and chambers beneath the surface.

Andrew Jones, one of the researchers involved in the project, told the Daily Mail that scans revealed “a tunnel that is not filled in, which leads to a big central void, a room that goes much further down that is square shaped.”

Jones also stated, “Our assumption is that this could be part of Noah’s Ark, possibly the central hall and some of the decks. There’s definitely something preserved underground.”

According to the Daily Mail, researchers have also reported differences in soil composition inside the formation. Jones said the soil contains more organic matter and potassium and is less alkaline than surrounding areas. He argued that such conditions could be consistent with the long-term decay of a large wooden structure.

The dimensions of the formation have also fueled interest. Biblical measurements describe the Ark as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Researchers claim the size of the Durupinar Formation closely corresponds to those proportions.

Not everyone is convinced. Many geologists continue to maintain that the formation is a natural geological feature rather than the remains of an ancient vessel. The upcoming investigation will seek additional evidence that could either strengthen or weaken the ark hypothesis.

Jones also noted that Scripture refers to the “mountains of Ararat,” not necessarily a single mountain peak. “Back in those days, Ararat was an ancient kingdom,” he told the Daily Mail. “So it would be like saying today that Noah’s Ark landed in the mountains of Colorado.”

The new expedition is expected to begin later this year, with findings to be released as data is analyzed and verified.

For Catholics, the significance of such research extends beyond archaeology. While the Church does not require belief in any particular proposed location for Noah’s Ark, discoveries that illuminate the historical and cultural background of Sacred Scripture can deepen appreciation for God’s saving plan revealed throughout salvation history.

Whether the Durupinar Formation ultimately proves to be Noah’s Ark or simply an intriguing natural formation, researchers hope the new investigation will provide clearer answers to a question that has fascinated believers for generations.
