If You Believe the Bible, You Believe the Bible: A Catholic Defense of Leviticus 20:13
The verse is unambiguous: “The man who has intercourse with a man in the same way as with a woman: they have done a hateful thing together; they will be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
For any Catholic who accepts Scripture as the inspired Word of God, this cannot be set aside. We are not free to pick and choose verses based on politics or personal preference. The same Bible that gives us the Beatitudes and the Resurrection also gives us Leviticus 20:13.
Scripture is consistent on this matter. Romans 1:26-27 describes same-sex acts as “contrary to nature.” First Corinthians 6:9-10 lists those who practice homosexuality among those who will not inherit the Kingdom of God. First Timothy 1:10 echoes this. The teaching is not ambiguous.
The Catholic Church has always held that homosexual acts are gravely sinful. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2357 to 2359, states that Scripture presents them as “grave depravity” and “intrinsically disordered.” They contradict natural law because the sexual faculty is ordered toward procreation and the unity of male and female. This is not a modern invention; it’s the consistent witness of the Church Fathers and two thousand years of tradition.
The Church distinguishes between the person and the act. The person with same-sex attraction is called to chastity, supported by grace, prayer, and the sacraments. This is the call to love the sinner while rejecting the sin. It is not hatred; it is mercy. The same standard applies to every person, regardless of orientation.
This teaching is not unique to Catholicism. The Quran also condemns homosexual acts, with verses like 7:80-84 and 26:165-175 recounting the story of Lot. Major Abrahamic faiths agree that homosexual behavior is morally wrong.
Today, a small but vocal minority seeks to normalize these acts, often with the help of media and educational institutions. This includes events in schools where cross-dressing performers interact with young children. This is not compassion; it is confusion.
Some argue that same-sex attraction is innate and unchangeable, but the Church calls it a “disordered appetite.” While compassion is due to those who struggle, compassion does not require redefining sin.
The push toward transgender identification often follows. This ideology claims one can change sex, but God created male and female, as confirmed by our DNA. The sexual binary is not a social construct; it is written into our biology. Transgender procedures involve the mutilation of healthy bodies, often driven by a disordered desire for sexual gratification or identity confusion. This contradicts the created order.
The rainbow flag, once a biblical sign of God’s covenant with Noah, has been captured by activists. Catholics must speak with clarity and compassion. Leviticus 20:13 is not a suggestion; it is divine revelation.
If we believe the Bible, we believe the Bible. We cannot pretend otherwise without betraying the faith. The truth must be told.
