Pope Leo XIV encouraged Catholics to seek lasting fulfillment in God rather than the empty promises of consumer culture during his Angelus address on Sunday from Castel Gandolfo, according to Vatican News.
Reflecting on Christ’s parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price from the Gospel of Matthew, the Holy Father explained that discovering God’s Kingdom changes a person’s entire outlook on life. Rather than seeing sacrifices for Christ as losses, believers come to recognize them as opportunities for something far greater.
“Encountering his Kingdom marks a turning point that does not limit life but enlarges it,” Pope Leo said. “If anything must change on our part, it is only so that our lives may be opened to greater possibilities, not fewer.”
According to Vatican News, the Pope noted that Jesus frequently taught using familiar scenes from everyday life, drawing examples from farmers, merchants, fishermen, shepherds, builders, women preparing bread, and many others. These ordinary experiences reveal that every person, regardless of age, background, or social standing, is invited to discover the transforming power of God’s Kingdom.
Pope Leo also reflected on the unity found within the Church. While Christians come from different cultures, nations, and walks of life, they are united in Jesus Christ, who gathers together those who might otherwise never have met.
“He is the hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, the net that gathers those who are scattered,” the Pope said.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo emphasized that from the very beginning of His public ministry, Jesus welcomed people from every background while showing particular care for those who were small, forgotten, or overlooked, revealing God’s impartial and merciful love.
The Holy Father concluded by encouraging Catholics to imitate the wisdom of the young King Solomon by asking God for the ability to recognize what truly has lasting value.
He warned that modern consumer culture continually creates new desires while offering temporary solutions that ultimately fail to satisfy the human heart. Instead, Christians are called to seek the lasting treasure found in a living relationship with God—a relationship that fills the heart with authentic joy and strengthens love for others.
