A peaceful morning of prayer at a Catholic church in Ireland was shattered Tuesday when a woman was seriously injured in a stabbing attack during the recitation of the Rosary.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. on July 21 inside Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford, interrupting parishioners gathered for the morning Rosary before the scheduled 10 a.m. Mass. According to LifeSiteNews, the victim has been identified as Mary McNamara and was transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities later arrested a man at a nearby residence. According to reports cited by LifeSiteNews, the suspect has been described by police as a white Irish man in his thirties.
LifeSiteNews also reported that McNamara is a pro-life activist, citing a source familiar with the situation.
Local officials indicated there was no known relationship between the victim and the suspect. According to the Irish Mirror, local councilor Jim Griffin said, “Mary ran away screaming from her attacker. He was not known to her.”
Parish priest Father Richard O’Halloran described the attack as unexpected. According to the Irish Mirror, he said the incident was “random in nature.”
“It has been a very shocking event,” Father O’Halloran said, according to the Irish Mirror. “However, the people and, indeed, my colleague who was there at the time responded wonderfully well. All the emergency services were called, and they looked after everything that was happening.”
Following the attack, the Diocese of Waterford & Lismore issued a public statement expressing sorrow over the violence that unfolded within the church.
“We are deeply shocked by a violent incident which occurred this morning during Mass at Holy Cross Church, Tramore,” the diocese said in its statement.
The diocesan statement continued by assuring prayers for the victim while recognizing those who responded during the emergency.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured parishioner, and we pray for her full and speedy recovery,” the statement said. The diocese also commended “the courage and presence of mind shown by the parishioners who assisted during this frightening incident” and thanked the priests, An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, and emergency personnel for their swift response.
The statement concluded with an invitation to the faithful throughout the diocese to pray “for the injured woman, for everyone affected by this distressing incident, and for the parish community of Holy Cross, Tramore.”
