A Nebraska man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he threatened a Catholic school, vowed to kill religious sisters, and targeted the children of Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen.
According to LifeSiteNews, 32-year-old Ean Halstead was arrested Friday following a standoff with law enforcement after investigators linked him to an online threat directed at Columbus Catholic Schools.
Authorities allege that on June 26, a message posted to the school’s Facebook page threatened a mass shooting and specifically stated an intention to kill Governor Pillen’s children and several nuns. Although the message appeared under the name “Bobby McGee,” investigators were reportedly able to trace the account back to Halstead, according to LifeSiteNews.
During a search of Halstead’s apartment, investigators reportedly recovered electronic devices that connected him to the online threats. He has since been charged with making terroristic threats and destruction of evidence and is being held in the Douglas County Jail, according to LifeSiteNews.
Local television station KFOR reported that Halstead has a prior history involving violent threats. According to the station, he was previously convicted after threatening an ex-boyfriend and setting the victim’s bedroom on fire.
Nebraska officials praised the swift response by investigators and emphasized that threats against schools will not be tolerated.
“Nebraska law enforcement takes threats against our schools seriously, and the Nebraska State Patrol will continue to use every resource available to protect students, staff, and our communities,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, according to LifeSiteNews.
He added, “I want to thank our dedicated team for their professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to keeping Nebraskans safe. This investigation reflects the importance of preparation, collaboration, and the strong partnerships that allow swift and effective response to this type of incident. We are thankful for a safe outcome for all involved.”
Governor Pillen’s office also expressed gratitude for the investigation.
“We are extremely grateful to the dedicated investigators of the Nebraska State Patrol and allied law enforcement agencies for their quick and thorough work to track down this individual and ensure the security of the First Family,” said Dave Lopez, Governor Pillen’s chief of staff.
Lopez also condemned threats of political violence, stating, “We have zero tolerance for political violence here in Nebraska, including threats to carry it out. If you threaten violence against a public official or their family in this state, you will be found and held accountable. The heated political rhetoric that too often leads to radicalization and violence must cool off.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Catholic schools, religious communities, and families from acts of intimidation and violence. While no one was harmed, authorities say the rapid investigation helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation.
