The Vatican has formally declared that the bishops involved in the Society of St. Pius X’s (SSPX) unauthorized episcopal consecrations have incurred automatic excommunication, marking a dramatic escalation in the decades-long dispute between the Holy See and the traditionalist fraternity.
In a decree issued July 2 by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican stated that Bishops Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay, along with newly consecrated Bishops Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry, and Marc Hanappier, incurred ipso facto latae sententiae excommunication for carrying out “the episcopal consecration of four presbyters, without pontifical mandate and against the will of the Supreme Pontiff,” according to Vatican News.
The decree, signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, was issued one day after the July 1 consecration ceremony at the SSPX seminary in Écône, Switzerland, despite repeated appeals from Pope Leo XIV asking the society not to proceed.
According to Vatican News, the Dicastery described the ordinations as “an act of a schismatic nature” and stated that both the consecrating bishops and those consecrated automatically incurred the canonical penalty of excommunication.
Alongside the decree, the Dicastery released an explanatory note stating that repeated efforts by successive popes and Vatican officials to restore full communion with the movement founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre had failed.
“From the time of Saint Paul VI up to the most recent talks, held recently at this Dicastery, the many attempts to bring the members of the movement begun by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre back into full communion with the Catholic Church have proved vain,” the note states, according to Vatican News.
The Vatican further declared that the recent episcopal consecrations “constituted the delict of schism,” citing St. John Paul II’s 1988 apostolic letter Ecclesia Dei, which stated that such disobedience “constitutes a schismatic act.”
The explanatory note goes beyond the bishops directly involved. According to Vatican News, it states that sacred ministers belonging to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X “are in schism and must therefore be considered schismatics” and are subject to excommunication under canon law.
The document also warns that lay faithful who formally adhere to the SSPX “are to be considered schismatics and excommunicated” under the conditions established by a 1996 explanatory note issued by the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts.
The Dicastery additionally cautioned Catholics regarding the society’s sacramental ministry.
According to Vatican News, the explanatory note states that SSPX clergy “administer the sacraments illicitly,” adding that “the sacrament of penance administered by them and marriages assisted by them are invalid.”
EWTN News noted that these declarations represent a significant development because Pope Francis had previously granted SSPX priests special faculties to hear confessions and assist at marriages as part of his outreach to the society. The new decree now explicitly states that confessions and marriages administered by SSPX clergy are invalid.
The Vatican concluded its statement by encouraging reconciliation rather than permanent separation.
“The Church, as a caring mother, will welcome with sincere affection and lively solicitude all those who wish to return to full communion,” the explanatory note states, according to Vatican News.
The decree also urges Catholics to remain united with Pope Leo XIV, the bishops in communion with him, and the universal Church, while refraining from participating in celebrations and activities organized by the SSPX.
According to EWTN News, the Vatican had warned as early as May 13 that proceeding with the episcopal consecrations would constitute a schismatic act carrying automatic excommunication. Pope Leo XIV personally appealed to the society in a final letter before the ceremony, writing, “Please turn back.”
The SSPX has consistently defended its actions, maintaining that the consecrations were necessary for the continuation of its apostolic work because of what it describes as a state of emergency within the Church. According to LifeSiteNews, the society has also rejected the validity of the canonical penalties imposed upon it.
