As cardinals prepare to gather in Rome this week for an Extraordinary Consistory convened by Pope Leo XIV, the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) has released an extensive “Profession of Catholic Faith” accompanied by an open letter addressed to the Holy Father and the College of Cardinals, according to LifeSiteNews.
According to the SSPX, the document was issued both in connection with its planned episcopal consecrations and as a response to what it describes as “the chief and gravest dangers of our time.” The profession presents a comprehensive statement of traditional Catholic doctrine while rejecting what the Society identifies as modern theological, liturgical, and pastoral errors.
In its letter to Pope Leo XIV and the cardinals, the SSPX expressed concern about the current state of the Church, writing: “Today the Church suffers under the pressure of new forces, coming both from within and without, which push her in every possible direction, except – it seems to us – the right one.”
The Society added that it could not remain silent amid what it sees as a deepening crisis affecting both the Church and the wider world. According to the letter, “Tradition contains all the remedies for the deepest ills afflicting the Church and the world, for which solutions are sought in vain outside of it.”
The newly published profession spans 17 chapters and 154 doctrinal affirmations. It covers topics ranging from Divine Revelation, the Holy Trinity, and the Incarnation to the sacraments, the papacy, Catholic morality, the liturgy, and the Church’s mission in the modern world.
Throughout the document, the SSPX repeatedly emphasizes continuity with what it describes as the Church’s traditional teaching. The Society states that it embraces “the entire truth of the Catholic Faith” handed down from the Apostles and preserved through the centuries by the Church.
The profession also contains strong critiques of modernism, religious indifferentism, secularism, and contemporary theological trends. It rejects what the Society calls “false ecumenism,” theological relativism, and interpretations of doctrine that it believes depart from the Church’s historic teaching.
Several sections focus specifically on developments following the Second Vatican Council. In its concluding chapter, the SSPX argues that modern errors have entered Church life through “the influence of the Second Vatican Council and the post-conciliar reforms,” resulting in what it calls “a crisis of exceptional gravity.” The Society links this crisis to declining religious practice, confusion among the faithful, weakened missionary activity, and a diminished sense of the sacred.
The document also reaffirms the Society’s longstanding support for the traditional Latin Mass. According to the profession, the traditional Roman rite expresses Catholic teaching on sacrifice, priesthood, and the Real Presence with particular clarity, while the Society argues that later liturgical reforms contributed to a weakening of Catholic belief and practice.
Despite its criticisms, the profession repeatedly affirms loyalty to the Roman Pontiff and the Catholic Church. In its conclusion, the SSPX declares its desire to remain “Faithful to eternal Rome which guards the Deposit transmitted by the Apostles” and to preserve the Catholic faith “without diminution, without alteration, and without fear.”
The publication comes just days before Pope Leo XIV’s June 26-27 meeting with cardinals, where discussions are expected to include the current situation of the Church, global conflicts, and the implementation of the Synod process.
The SSPX said it hopes its profession will serve as what it calls a “sincere and integral profession of Catholic Faith” offered for the good of the universal Church during a period it considers both unstable and spiritually perilous.
