Biblical Plague? Massive Cricket Swarms Overrun Western States, Sparking Revelation Comparisons

As massive swarms of Mormon crickets spread across parts of the American West, residents are describing scenes of overwhelmed neighborhoods, damaged landscapes, and roads covered with thousands of insects. The unusual outbreak has also sparked renewed discussion among some Christians about biblical imagery involving plagues and end-times prophecies.

According to the Daily Mail, large numbers of Mormon crickets have recently appeared in parts of Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon, with particularly severe infestations reported near Ashton, Idaho, not far from Yellowstone National Park.

Residents in the affected communities have described the situation as a “bug-infested nightmare” as homes, yards, and streets become blanketed by the insects. Officials say the crickets emerged as early as April this year, earlier than normal, raising concerns that populations could continue to grow throughout the summer months.

Meteorologist Matt Johnson explained the conditions behind the outbreak in comments posted on Facebook. “The massive Mormon cricket infestation taking over Ashton is primarily driven by the region’s dry winter and warm spring, which created ideal conditions for prolific, early egg hatching,” Johnson said, according to the Daily Mail. He added that the insects “operate in multi-year population cycles and tend to peak during prolonged stretches of drought.”

Despite their name, Mormon crickets are not true crickets. The flightless insects more closely resemble large grasshoppers and can reach lengths of up to two inches. They are known for their aggressive behavior and unusual tendency toward cannibalism.

According to the Daily Mail, Mormon crickets consume hundreds of plant species and will even eat members of their own swarm. Experts say this behavior contributes to the insects’ relentless movement, as weaker or injured crickets risk being consumed by those following behind.

The insects can cause significant problems when their numbers surge. Large swarms have been known to damage crops, disrupt local ecosystems, and create dangerous driving conditions.

Joey Nikirk, a spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management, said the insects are creating hazardous conditions on roads in some areas. “The crickets are causing nuisance conditions where they are creating road hazards due to large densities over the road and associated odor from crickets that have been run over [by motor vehicles],” Nikirk said, according to the Daily Mail.

Nikirk also noted that the insects are attracted to warm pavement. “They are also attracted to protein and salt sources [from] other dead crickets on the road surface,” he said.

As images and videos of the swarms spread across social media, some users began comparing the phenomenon to biblical descriptions of locust plagues and apocalyptic judgments. The Daily Mail reported that some online commentators pointed specifically to the Book of Revelation, where the Fifth Trumpet describes locust-like creatures emerging during a period of divine judgment.

One social media user cited Revelation 9:3, which states: “And there came out of the smoke Locusts upon the earth, and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.”

While Mormon crickets are not the locusts described in Scripture, the dramatic scenes have nevertheless reminded many Christians of the Bible’s recurring use of insect plagues as symbols of warning, judgment, and humanity’s dependence upon God.

Officials in affected areas continue to encourage residents to take practical precautions, including sealing openings around homes, eliminating food and water sources that may attract insects, and reporting significant swarm activity.

For now, experts emphasize that the current outbreak is a natural phenomenon linked to weather conditions and population cycles. Yet for many believers, the spectacle also serves as a reminder of the power of creation and the importance of remaining spiritually vigilant in every age.
