Pennsylvania Baseball Team Forfeits ‘Pride Night Game’ After Majority of Players Refuse Rainbow Jerseys

A professional baseball team in Pennsylvania forfeited a scheduled game this week after a majority of its players reportedly declined to wear special LGBTQ-themed “Pride Night” jerseys.

According to LifeSiteNews, the York Revolution of the Atlantic League canceled its June 18 game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs after fewer than nine players were willing to participate while wearing the Pride-themed uniforms.

In a public statement, the organization expressed strong disapproval of the players’ decision.

“It is with great disappointment that the York Revolution have issued important changes to our 11th Annual Pride Night on Thursday, June 18th,” the team stated, according to LifeSiteNews. “Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey.”

The organization announced that the game would be forfeited while continuing with the planned Pride Night activities.

“As a result, and out of respect for the Pride Community and the York community as a whole, the York Revolution has decided that the game on Thursday, June 18 will be forfeited and that Pride Night will continue on as the feature element of the evening at WellSpan Park,” the statement said, according to LifeSiteNews.

The team further distanced itself from the players’ actions, stating, “To be clear; this action by the players is completely inconsistent with our vision as the Most Welcoming Place in York.”

According to the club’s statement, the Revolution also pledged a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center, an organization serving the local LGBTQ community.

NBC News, as cited by LifeSiteNews, reported that “fewer than nine players” on the roster were willing to wear the Pride-themed jerseys. The report also stated that an “unprecedented” team meeting was held in an effort to persuade players to participate, but team officials were ultimately unable to convince enough players to wear the uniforms.

The incident reflects a broader trend in professional baseball in which some athletes have declined to participate in Pride-related promotions due to personal or religious convictions.

According to LifeSiteNews, three Christian players with the San Francisco Giants recently cited passages from Genesis 9 on team-issued Pride Night caps, while a Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher previously declined to wear his team’s Pride-themed cap.

The York controversy has sparked renewed discussion about the balance between organizational diversity initiatives and the religious freedom and conscience rights of individual athletes. For many Christians, participation in events or messaging that conflict with their beliefs presents difficult questions about faith, witness, and professional obligations.

As debates over religious liberty and cultural expectations continue across professional sports, the events in York are likely to remain part of the ongoing national conversation.
