More than 1.2 million faithful gathered in Madrid for the Feast of Corpus Christi as Pope Leo XIV urged Catholics to ensure that the faith which shaped Spain’s history continues to guide its future.

Celebrating Mass in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, Pope Leo reflected on the profound significance of Corpus Christi and the enduring role of Catholicism in Spanish culture. According to Vatican News, the Holy Father noted that Spain’s religious traditions—including solemn processions, sacred music, architecture, and artistic expressions—have deeply influenced the nation’s identity for centuries.

Yet the Pope warned against treating those traditions merely as historical artifacts or cultural attractions.

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo emphasized that Spain’s religious heritage should not become “a museum of the past to be visited, but a school of faith from which to draw even today.”

The Holy Father reminded the faithful that devotion to the Eucharist must lead to personal transformation. He reflected on Christ’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament, explaining that the Eucharist enables believers to become bread that is “broken, given, and offered” for others, strengthening families, communities, and nations.

The celebration drew pilgrims from throughout Spain and beyond. Many arrived before dawn to participate in the historic Mass and witness the Pope’s presence.

One pilgrim, Marianne, traveled from Toledo, leaving home at 4 a.m. in order to secure a place along the route. According to Vatican News, she described the opportunity to see the Holy Father up close as a rare blessing.

The event also attracted numerous young Catholics. Augustinian Recollect Friar Francisco, who traveled from Costa Rica, expressed joy at the enormous turnout. According to Vatican News, he observed that the presence of hundreds of thousands of young people demonstrated that “the faith here in Spain is actually quite alive.”

For Madrid native Alexia, attending the Mass was a natural response to the Pope’s visit. According to Vatican News, she said of Pope Leo’s message: “It’s alive; it’s strong; it has meaning, and it has changed us.”

Later in the day, Pope Leo met with representatives from various sectors of society, including artists, athletes, educators, business leaders, and performers. Among those who addressed the Holy Father was actor Antonio Banderas, who spoke about the relationship between faith and artistic expression. Athletes Teresa Perales and Carolina Marín shared reflections on perseverance, humility, and solidarity.

During the gathering, Pope Leo challenged attendees to consider a series of profound questions about the future of society and the human person.

According to Vatican News, he asked: “What legacy are we leaving for the future and, by extension, what kind of community are we building?” He also posed questions including, “What does it mean to be truly human?” and “What values are we preserving and which are we allowing to die?”

The Holy Father further encouraged reflection on Europe’s Christian roots, asking, “Is it seriously possible to believe that Europe would be the same without the influence of faith?”

Pope Leo concluded by stressing that the future of humanity depends upon recognizing and cultivating authentic human greatness. According to Vatican News, he called on people from every walk of life to “be new protagonists for weaving new networks that harmonise all areas of life.”

His message offered both a challenge and an invitation: that Catholics not simply preserve the faith of previous generations, but actively live and share it in a world increasingly marked by division, isolation, and uncertainty.
