Hundreds of California Schools Accused of Keeping Children’s Gender Transitions Secret from Parents

For generations, parents have been recognized as the primary educators and guardians of their children. Long before schools, governments, or social institutions became involved in a child’s life, mothers and fathers carried the sacred responsibility of guiding, protecting, and nurturing their sons and daughters. Today, many families believe that responsibility is increasingly being challenged.

According to LifeSiteNews, the Liberty Justice Center (LCJ) has sent a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta warning that hundreds of school districts across the state may be violating federal law and constitutional protections by concealing students’ gender transitions from their parents. The letter argues that policies adopted under California’s Assembly Bill 1955 prevent parents from being informed when a child requests changes to names, pronouns, or gender identity while at school.

For Catholics, this issue reaches far beyond politics. It touches the very heart of the family and the God-given role of parents. The Catholic Church has consistently taught that parents possess the primary right and duty to educate their children. Schools exist to assist families, not replace them.

The idea that significant information about a child’s emotional, psychological, or social development could be intentionally withheld from parents is deeply troubling. Whether one agrees or disagrees with contemporary gender ideology, it should not be controversial to affirm that mothers and fathers deserve to know what is happening in their children’s lives.

LCJ senior counsel Timothy Snowball argued that “Parents have a right, both legally and morally, to direct their own children’s education. This includes knowing essential information about their health, well-being, and education,” according to LifeSiteNews.

Catholics are called to view every child as a beloved creation of God, deserving of dignity, compassion, and truth. Children who experience confusion, distress, or questions about their identity need loving support from the people who know them best. In most cases, that support begins at home. Excluding parents from these conversations risks creating division where trust and communication are most needed.

According to LifeSiteNews, the Liberty Justice Center’s new initiative, Parental Action and Rights Enforcement to Ensure Notice, Transparency, and Safety (PARENTS), seeks to defend families when government agencies or school systems attempt to withhold critical information from parents. The organization argues that such policies may violate the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as well as constitutional protections for parental rights.

Snowball also wrote that “Gender dysphoria is a condition that has an important bearing on a child’s mental health, and policies concealing that information from parents likely violate parents’ rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children,” according to LifeSiteNews.

At its core, this debate is not simply about laws, regulations, or school policies. It is about whether parents will continue to be respected as the primary stewards of their children’s lives. Catholic teaching affirms that families are the foundation of society, and healthy families depend upon honesty, trust, and open communication.

Children deserve protection. Parents deserve transparency. Schools should partner with families, not keep secrets from them.

As these legal battles continue, Catholics should pray for wisdom among lawmakers, educators, and parents alike. Every child deserves loving guidance rooted in truth, and every parent deserves the opportunity to fulfill the sacred responsibility God has entrusted to them.
