Britain’s ‘First Gay Surrogate Dad,’ Now with 8 Kids, Charged With Rape and Exploitation Crimes

A wealthy homosexual couple once celebrated in the United Kingdom for using surrogacy to obtain children is now facing serious criminal charges involving alleged sexual exploitation, rape, and trafficking offenses — a disturbing case that is reigniting debate over the consequences of separating children from the natural family structure established by God.

According to LifeSiteNews, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, and Scott Drewitt-Barlow, 32, both of Essex, England, were charged after police reportedly raided their home in Danbury. The Crown Prosecution Service announced multiple charges tied to the alleged exploitation of young males.

Christian Meikle of the Crown Prosecution Service stated that “Barrie Drewitt-Barlow and Scott Drewitt-Barlow have each been charged with arranging or facilitating travel of another person with a view to exploitation, as well as other sexual offences including rape,” according to LifeSiteNews.

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow has been charged with three counts of sexual assault on a male, four counts of rape of a man aged 16 or older, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel of another person with a view to exploitation. Scott Drewitt-Barlow faces one count of sexual assault on a male, one count of rape of a man aged 16 or older, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel of another person with a view to exploitation, according to the report.

The case has drawn international attention because Barrie Drewitt-Barlow and his former partner Tony were widely publicized in 1999 as the first homosexual couple in Britain to obtain children through surrogacy. According to LifeSiteNews, they were also reportedly the first in the UK to have a birth certificate use the terms “Parent One” and “Parent Two” instead of “Mother” and “Father.”

For many Christians, the scandal highlights deeper concerns about modern attempts to redefine the family and intentionally remove either motherhood or fatherhood from a child’s life. Catholic teaching has long emphasized that children deserve both a mother and a father whenever possible — not because men and women are interchangeable, but because each parent brings unique and irreplaceable gifts to the raising of a child.

The Church teaches that motherhood is not a social construct but a sacred vocation. A mother provides emotional, spiritual, and nurturing gifts that cannot simply be replaced through contracts, wealth, or technology. Fathers are equally essential. Together, motherhood and fatherhood reflect God’s design for the family.

Critics of commercial surrogacy also warn that the process can reduce both women and children to commodities. In a previously published interview referenced by LifeSiteNews, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow reportedly admitted to paying a Miami model approximately £50,000 to serve as an egg donor because he wanted attractive children and did not want “ugly ones.”

Many Catholics see such comments as evidence of a growing cultural mindset that treats children less as gifts from God and more as customizable products.

The Times, cited by LifeSiteNews, reported that prosecutor Serena Berry alleged the pair “have both targeted young males, they have recruited them, they have befriended them, they have groomed them.”

Global children’s rights organization Them Before Us responded to the case by warning about the vulnerabilities children can face when adult desires are prioritized over the rights and needs of children. The organization stated, “Anytime you see two men raising a child, understand that they didn’t even have to pass a background check.”

While the criminal allegations remain before the courts, the case has intensified discussion among Christians about the importance of protecting the God-given meaning of motherhood, fatherhood, and family life in an age increasingly shaped by reproductive technology and cultural redefinition.

The Drewitt-Barlows were expected to appear before Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Friday, according to the report.
