Forty-nine Spanish Martyrs Killed in Hatred of the Faith Recognized by Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV has formally recognized the martyrdom of 49 Catholics killed during the violence of the Spanish Civil War, marking a significant step forward in their journey toward sainthood.

According to Vatican News, the Holy Father authorized the promulgation of several decrees during a meeting with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. These decrees recognize martyrdom, the offering of life, and heroic virtue among a number of Servants of God.

Among the most striking developments is the recognition of the martyrdom of Stanislao Ortega García, along with 48 companions, and diocesan priest Emanuel Berenguer Clusella. These men were killed between July and November 1936 in Catalonia during a period of intense anti-Catholic persecution. The Church confirmed they were slain “in hatred of the faith,” according to Vatican News.

This designation of martyrdom is especially significant within the Church, as it affirms that these men gave their lives as witnesses to Christ in the face of violent opposition. Their sacrifice now brings them closer to beatification, a major step on the path to canonization.

In addition to the recognition of these martyrs, Pope Leo XIV also acknowledged the “offering of life” of Pietro Emanuele Salado Alba, a layman who died in 2012. According to Vatican News, his life was given in a spirit of Christian charity, a category distinct from martyrdom but equally honored by the Church as a path toward sainthood.

The Pope further approved decrees recognizing the heroic virtues of three women religious: Maria Eletta of Jesus, Maria Teresa of the Most Holy Trinity, and Maria Raffaella De Giovanna. Each lived lives of profound faith and service, and the recognition of their virtues affirms that they practiced the Christian life to an extraordinary degree.

The promulgation of these decrees marks meaningful progress in multiple causes for canonization. As the Church continues to lift up these examples of holiness, the faithful are reminded that sanctity is found not only in extraordinary moments of sacrifice, but also in lives of quiet fidelity, courage, and love rooted in Christ.
