Amid escalating violence in southern Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV has offered a message of consolation and hope to Christians suffering the devastating effects of war, reminding them that the Resurrection of Christ remains a source of unshakable joy even in the darkest moments.
According to Vatican News, the Pope directed his Easter message in a particular way to the people of Debel, a village deeply affected by ongoing conflict. His words were delivered not in person, as originally planned, but through Archbishop Paolo Borgia, who was forced to remain at a United Nations base due to continued attacks in the region.
Despite the distance, the Holy Father’s message emphasized spiritual closeness. Through a statement signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope expressed his “proximity and paternal tenderness” to those enduring suffering, extending his consolation “to all Christians of southern Lebanon and to all people who suffer the consequences of war,” according to Vatican News.
Easter Was Just the Beginning… Please Watch
At the heart of his message was the enduring hope of Easter. “Today we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord,” the Pope wrote. “May you, in the midst of feelings of pain, anxiety, and mourning, come to know in your hearts a deeper joy: Jesus has gloriously triumphed over death. It is a joy that comes from heaven and that nothing can take away,” according to Vatican News.
Acknowledging the deep wounds carried by those in conflict zones, Pope Leo XIV reminded the faithful that their suffering unites them closely with Christ. “In your misfortune, in the injustice you endure, in the feeling of abandonment you experience, you are very close to Jesus,” he said, adding that Christ’s victory over evil stands as a promise that suffering will not have the final word, according to Vatican News.
The Pope also offered a heartfelt encouragement to persevere in faith and prayer. “Do not lose courage,” he urged. “No prayer of yours, no gesture of solidarity, no sigh of weariness that you express is lost,” according to Vatican News.
Originally, the papal message was meant to accompany a humanitarian mission bringing aid to those in need, organized in collaboration with Catholic charitable groups. However, the effort was halted due to the dangerous conditions caused by ongoing military activity. Even so, the Church continues its efforts to provide assistance to affected communities.
Entrusting the people of Lebanon to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Lebanon, the Pope expressed confidence that their suffering is not unseen. He concluded by imparting his Apostolic Blessing upon all those enduring the trials of war, as well as their families and loved ones.
In a world marked by conflict and uncertainty, the Pope’s message stands as a powerful reminder to the faithful: even in the midst of war, the light of the Resurrection cannot be extinguished.
