First Easter Message of Pope Leo XIV Urges Hope, Renewal, and an End to War

More than fifty thousand faithful gathered in Saint Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday as Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message of hope, urging both personal renewal and global peace in a world marked by suffering and conflict.

Reflecting on the Resurrection, the Pope proclaimed that Christ’s victory over death is not just a past event but a living reality that transforms human life. He said the Easter message “opens us up to a hope that never fails, to a light that never fades, to a fullness of joy that nothing can take away,” according to Vatican News. Emphasizing the triumph of Christ, he added that “death has been conquered forever” and no longer holds power over humanity.

The Pope acknowledged that this hope can be difficult to embrace amid real suffering. He pointed to both internal struggles and global crises, noting that sin, pain, and despair can leave people feeling “as if we have ended up in a tunnel with no end in sight,” according to Vatican News. At the same time, he highlighted the visible wounds of the world—war, injustice, and the exploitation of the vulnerable—as constant reminders of humanity’s need for redemption.

Yet, he urged the faithful not to remain in darkness. “Through the cracks of resurrection that open up in the darkness, he entrusts our hearts to the hope that sustains us,” the Pope said, according to Vatican News, encouraging Christians to lift their gaze and trust that God is still at work.

In his Easter homily, Pope Leo called believers to become witnesses of this hope, saying, “It is ourselves, risen with Christ, who must bring him into the streets of the world,” according to Vatican News. He invoked the image of Mary Magdalene running to proclaim the Resurrection, urging Catholics to carry that same joy into everyday life.

Following the Mass, the Pope delivered his Urbi et Orbi message, turning his attention to the global stage with a direct appeal to world leaders. “Let those who have weapons lay them down!” he urged, calling for peace built not on force but on encounter and dialogue, according to Vatican News.

He warned that society is becoming desensitized to violence, echoing concerns also reported by NBC News, where he cautioned that the world risks growing “accustomed to violence” and “indifferent to the deaths of thousands of people.” Repeating his plea, he insisted, “We cannot continue to be indifferent… And we cannot resign ourselves to evil.”

The Pope stressed that true peace is rooted in Christ and must begin within the human heart. Easter, he explained, is not merely the absence of war but a transformation that brings healing and reconciliation. The victory of Christ, he said, was achieved not through force but through love—a love that “forgives and redeems,” according to Vatican News.

Drawing together both messages, Pope Leo XIV presented Easter as both a personal invitation and a global mission: to reject despair, to embrace the power of the Resurrection, and to become instruments of peace in a divided world.

As the celebration concluded, the Pope reminded the faithful that a new life has already begun. “Easter is the new creation brought about by the Risen Lord,” he said, according to Vatican News, a beginning that calls every Christian to carry the light of Christ wherever darkness remains.
