Pope Leo XIV Carried the Cross Through Rome’s Colosseum in Powerful Good Friday Witness

(Vatican Media)

On Good Friday, Pope Leo XIV offered a striking and deeply symbolic witness to the Passion of Christ, personally carrying the Cross throughout the Via Crucis at the Colosseum in Rome. Surrounded by tens of thousands of faithful and joined spiritually by millions around the world, the Holy Father led the Church into the solemn mystery of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice.

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo XIV became only the second Pope in modern history to carry the Cross for the entire Way of the Cross at the Colosseum, following the example of Pope John Paul II, who did so for many years during his pontificate.

The ancient Colosseum—once a place where early Christians were martyred—was illuminated by candlelight as approximately 30,000 faithful gathered to walk spiritually alongside Christ through the fourteen Stations of the Cross. The setting served as a powerful reminder of the Church’s history of suffering, witness, and redemption.

As the Holy Father carried the Cross, Scripture passages were proclaimed, accompanied by reflections drawn from the writings of St. Francis and meditations prepared by Franciscan Father Francesco Patton. These reflections invited the faithful to see the Passion not as a distant event, but as a lived reality in today’s world.

In one meditation, Fr. Patton reflected on the challenges of modern faith, noting, “As in the time of Jesus, we find ourselves walking through a chaotic, distracting and noisy environment, surrounded by people who share our faith in Him, but also by those who deride or insult Him,” according to Vatican News.

He emphasized that authentic Christian life must be lived in the midst of the world’s struggles, adding, “The Way of the Cross is not intended for those who lead a pristinely pious or abstractly recollected life… Instead, it is the exercise of one who knows that faith, hope and charity must be incarnated in the real world,” according to Vatican News.

Throughout the Stations, the meditations confronted the reality of human weakness—our attraction to power, our rejection of suffering, and our tendency to seek glory rather than humility. As Jesus falls under the weight of the Cross, the faithful were reminded to trust in God’s strength, discovering that true power is revealed through sacrificial love.

The reflections also highlighted the dignity of the human person, warning against systems and attitudes that degrade others. They pointed to the quiet strength of those who remain with the suffering, especially the example of Our Lady, whose presence at the Cross teaches humanity how to grieve with love and remain faithful in sorrow.

At the conclusion of the Via Crucis, Pope Leo XIV offered a prayer inviting all Christians to deepen their communion with God. He called the faithful to respond to the Gospel by embracing a life rooted in love, echoing the call to “live our lives as a journey of ever-deepening participation in the communion of love,” according to Vatican News.

In carrying the Cross himself, Pope Leo XIV not only recalled Christ’s Passion but embodied it—offering the world a visible sign that the path to resurrection always passes through the Cross.
