A growing dispute involving Catholic figures and the Presidential Commission on Religious Liberty has ignited wider concerns about how faithfully Catholic teaching is represented and defended in the public square.
At the center of the controversy is Carrie Prejean Boller, a Catholic convert who was removed from the commission after expressing positions she says align with Church teaching. In a public appeal directed to Bishop Robert Barron, she urged greater support, writing, “If my religious freedom is not protected, then no one’s is. Please speak up. Please stand up for Catholics,” according to LifeSiteNews.
Prejean Boller maintained that her removal came as a direct result of articulating Catholic beliefs, particularly regarding theological interpretations of the modern state of Israel. She stated that Bishop Barron himself had previously acknowledged that her position “reflects Catholic teaching,” especially the understanding that “the modern state of Israel is not the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy,” according to LifeSiteNews.

She further argued that her dismissal raises serious concerns about the state of religious liberty, saying it is “difficult not to conclude that this commission does not truly care about religious liberty when a Catholic can be removed for faithfully articulating the Church’s teaching,” according to LifeSiteNews.
Invoking the words of Pope Leo XIII, she warned against silence in the face of opposition to truth: “To recoil before an enemy, or to keep silence when from all sides such clamor is raised against truth, is the part of a coward,” according to LifeSiteNews.
However, Bishop Barron strongly rejected her claims, offering a very different account of the situation. He stated that her removal was not due to her Catholic beliefs but rather her conduct during commission proceedings. “Mrs. Prejean Boller was not dismissed for her religious convictions but rather for her behavior… browbeating witnesses, aggressively asserting her point of view, hijacking the meeting for her own political purposes,” he said, according to LifeSiteNews.
Barron also clarified what he described as the Catholic position on Zionism, emphasizing that “all forms of antisemitism are to be unequivocally condemned; the state of Israel has a right to exist; but the modern nation of Israel does not represent the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies and hence does not stand beyond criticism,” according to LifeSiteNews.
He went further, dismissing the claim that her religious liberty had been violated, calling it “simply preposterous,” according to LifeSiteNews.
In response, Prejean Boller disputed Barron’s timeline, alleging that pressure for her resignation began months earlier. “I was asked to resign in August for the same reasons I was removed in February… Do you really want to stick with this story?” she said, according to LifeSiteNews.
The dispute has brought to light deeper divisions not only within political circles but also among Catholics themselves. According to LifeSiteNews, the situation reflects a broader ideological divide, where faithful Catholics seeking to uphold Church teaching may find themselves at odds with prevailing political or cultural pressures.
This episode raises pressing questions for Catholics engaged in public life: How can the faithful remain steadfast in proclaiming truth while navigating institutions shaped by competing ideologies? And what does authentic religious liberty look like when adherence to Church teaching becomes a point of contention?
As the debate continues, many Catholics are left reflecting on the call to courage in witness, trusting that fidelity to Christ must remain above all political or personal cost.
