As violence continues to shake the Middle East, a Catholic bishop serving the Gulf region is urging believers of different faiths to turn to prayer, repentance, and unity during this time of conflict.
According to Vatican News, Bishop Aldo Berardi, the Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, issued an appeal on March 5 encouraging Christians and Muslims to seek peace together through prayer and fasting. Addressing the people of the Kingdom of Bahrain, along with its leadership and residents, he spoke “on behalf of the entire Catholic Christian community” in the region with a message of hope during a time marked by war.
The bishop noted that the current conflict has emerged at a moment of deep spiritual significance for both religious communities. Christians have begun the Lenten season, a forty-day period of prayer, fasting, and repentance, while Muslims are observing the holy month of Ramadan.
“The outbreak of this war has found us all, both the Muslim and the Christian communities, in a particularly important religious season for each: the holy month of Ramadan and the great forty-day fast of Lent, respectively,” Bishop Berardi said, according to Vatican News.

He also reflected on the striking coincidence that both sacred seasons began on the same day this year, February 18. Rather than viewing this overlap as chance, he suggested it may be a sign of divine providence that invites both communities to walk a spiritual path together.
The bishop explained that the suffering brought by war reminds people of the fragility of life and the fleeting nature of earthly existence. In response, he urged believers to turn more deeply toward God through repentance and prayer.
According to Vatican News, Bishop Berardi encouraged both Christians and Muslims to recognize their shared journey during these holy seasons, saying the moment should inspire people to work “tirelessly in the search for paths that lead to peace.”
Prayer and fasting, he emphasized, can become powerful acts of solidarity with those suffering from the violence. He called for “constant and sincere prayer” so that believers may ask God for peace, while also seeking consolation for families who have lost loved ones or have been affected by the conflict.
In his message, Bishop Berardi also reminded believers that peace begins with a personal commitment to reconciliation and unity. “Let us be peacemakers,” he urged, asking God to guide humanity toward greater harmony.
He concluded with a heartfelt prayer that the violence in the region would come to an end. “Let us ask God to inspire paths of unity so that the roar of missiles may cease and we may, once and for all, live in communion in a land – the Middle East – so often marked, unfortunately, by division,” he said, according to Vatican News.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia serves Catholics across Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. According to Vatican News, much of the Catholic population in these countries consists of migrant workers from Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world who live and practice their faith far from their home nations.
In a region often marked by religious and political tensions, Bishop Berardi’s message highlights the possibility of shared spiritual reflection between Christians and Muslims. During this time when Ramadan and Lent unfold side by side, his call invites believers of both faiths to pray together for peace and for a future marked by reconciliation rather than conflict.
