The Holy See has condemned recent violence linked to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota, calling the deaths of two U.S. citizens “unacceptable” and reiterating the Church’s firm opposition to all forms of violence.
According to Vatican News, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, addressed the issue while speaking to journalists in Rome. Responding to questions about the situation in Minnesota, Cardinal Parolin emphasized that the Holy See consistently rejects violence as a means of resolving social and political tensions.
“The position of the Holy See is always to avoid any kind of violence,” Cardinal Parolin said, adding that difficulties, problems, and contradictions must be resolved in other ways. He aligned his remarks with a previous statement issued by the U.S. bishops, describing the situation as unacceptable.

During the same exchange with reporters, Cardinal Parolin addressed an open letter sent by the Network of Priests Against Genocide urging the Holy See not to participate in a proposed “Board of Peace” initiative reportedly being organized under U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Vatican News, the Secretary of State said no decision has yet been made. He acknowledged that the proposal contains “problematic aspects” that must be carefully evaluated before the Vatican offers a response, adding that the concerns raised are understood.
When asked about reports suggesting ICE agents could operate in Italy during the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Cardinal Parolin said he was aware of the reports but declined to enter into the controversy.
Hope for progress in Greenland talks
Vatican News also reported that Cardinal Parolin expressed cautious optimism regarding diplomatic discussions involving Greenland, following meetings in Denmark with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
Cardinal Parolin said Danish officials expressed confidence after dialogue with Washington and noted that public opinion in Denmark has responded positively to the government’s positions. While he did not comment on specific terms, he said the discussions appear to be moving toward a possible agreement.
Vatican hospital faces financial challenges
The Secretary of State was also asked about the financial difficulties and labor crisis affecting Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital founded by St. Pio of Pietrelcina and owned by the Holy See.
According to Vatican News, Cardinal Parolin said efforts are underway to help the hospital address its challenges. He said he would seek further information from the hospital’s leadership in response to concerns raised by workers about financial transparency, reaffirming the Vatican’s commitment to resolving the situation.
