Pope Leo XIV’s Christmas Message Illuminates the Streets of Rome, Literally

As Christmas continues to unfold in Rome, the message of the Holy Father is being carried beyond churches and basilicas into the everyday rhythm of the city itself. In a striking public initiative, images and words of Pope Leo XIV are appearing across prominent locations near the Vatican, transforming ordinary urban spaces into places of reflection and hope.

Rather than the seasonal commercial advertising that typically fills the cityscape, large digital screens now display photographs of the Pope alongside excerpts drawn from his speeches. According to Vatican News, the images and reflections are intended to offer “messages for the Christmas season and an invitation to hope,” allowing passersby to encounter the Pope’s voice in moments of daily life.

The initiative is promoted by the Dicastery for Communication in collaboration with Selfiestreet, using screens positioned in heavily traveled areas surrounding the Vatican Museums and nearby streets. According to a communiqué cited by Vatican News, “the presence of the Holy Father’s message in public spaces during the Christmas season serves as a sign of spiritual closeness and a reminder of the values of peace, hope, and fraternity.”

For many pilgrims and residents alike, the displays offer an unexpected pause amid the busyness of Rome. Vatican News reports that people often stop to read the messages shown alongside images of Pope Leo XIV with the faithful and Jubilee pilgrims, quietly engaging with words meant to lift hearts during the Christmas season.

Although rooted in the streets of the Eternal City, the campaign’s reach extends well beyond Rome. According to Vatican News, the initiative is also being widely shared on social media, allowing the Pope’s Christmas message to circulate digitally as well as physically.

Running through December 31, the project reflects a Church attentive to where people are — not only in sanctuaries, but in public squares, on sidewalks, and in the flow of everyday life. As Christmas draws to a close, the Holy Father’s words continue to meet people where they walk, inviting reflection on peace, hope, and fraternity at the close of the year.
