Pope Leo Urges Openness Toward Muslims; Critics Warn Against ‘Naïve’ Expectations

Pope Leo XIV used his recent visit to Türkiye and Lebanon to encourage Christians to embrace a spirit of confidence and openness in their relationships with Muslims, urging the faithful to resist fear-based narratives and to witness to the Gospel through dialogue.

During an interfaith gathering at Martyrs’ Square in Beirut, the Pope reflected on the unique religious landscape of Lebanon, where Christian churches and Muslim mosques stand side by side. He noted that this coexistence offers a visible reminder of the shared longing for God that marks the people of the region.

“Dear friends, your presence here today, in this extraordinary place where minarets and bell towers stand side by side, yet both soar toward the heavens, testifies to the enduring faith of this land and the persistent dedication of its people to the one God,” he said, according to LifeSiteNews. The Pope added that in this environment, “may every bell toll, every adhān, every call to prayer blend into a single, soaring hymn… to lift a heartfelt prayer for the divine gift of peace.”

In remarks to reporters on his return flight to Rome, Pope Leo addressed concerns expressed in Europe and North America about Islamic influence and the preservation of Christian identity. He acknowledged that tensions and fears certainly exist but warned that these anxieties are often fueled by political agendas rather than by genuine encounters with Muslim communities.

“I know that in Europe there are many times fears that are present but oftentimes generated by people who are against immigration and trying to keep out people who may be from another country, another religion, another race,” the Pope said, according to LifeSiteNews. Throughout his interactions in Türkiye and Lebanon, he emphasized that discussions “were precisely concentrated on the topic of peace and respect for people of different religions.”

Pope Leo underscored that Lebanon, despite its history of conflict, offers the world a valuable model of coexistence. “I think one of the great lessons that Lebanon can teach to the world is precisely showing a land where Islam and Christianity are both present and are respected and that there is a possibility to live together to be friends,” he stated. He urged Western nations to “be a little less fearful and look for ways of promoting authentic dialogue and respect.”

Not all Church leaders share the Pope’s perspective. According to LifeSiteNews, Bishop Marian Eleganti expressed concern that the Holy Father’s comments underestimate the serious theological differences between Christianity and Islam. Pointing to the Islamic teaching that God has no Son, the bishop argued that “where is the same God? It is impossible – it is such a contradiction,” and warned that the Pope’s optimism reflects “a naïve relationship with Islam.”

Eleganti also referenced Scripture, invoking Psalm 95 to caution that Christians must be discerning in how they understand other religions. His comments come amid ongoing reports of Christian persecution in parts of the world where Islamic extremism holds influence. According to LifeSiteNews’ reporting on the OpenDoors World Watch List, Islamic oppression remains the leading driver of Christian persecution in thirty-one of the fifty most affected countries.

As Pope Leo returns to Rome, the conversation he has sparked continues across the Catholic world. His call to “work together” and to highlight “the possibility that dialogue and friendship between Muslims and Christians is possible” invites Catholics to consider how they might pursue peace without overlooking the challenges faced by believers in regions where religious coexistence is fragile.

  1. This is an incredibly naive approach. To know the enemy is to be familiar with his book. The Quran need only be studied which brings clarity to this 1400 year war. 66% of Muslim lands were Christian. The conversion came not through spreading the truth of Islam, but at the tip of scimitar and the options were clear: pay jizya and be a second class citizen, convert to the Islamic faith, or die. I love the Catholic Church but this is just an extension not of biblical virtues but an extension of radical marxist ideology that started with liberation theology and extends to this particular discussion.

    1. 100% Correct. Islam spreads by conflict and conquest. Islam offers nothing but submission to violent demands and threats. The Islamic invasions into our Christian Western Civilization and Open Borders in America is 100% done by and for The Democratic Socialist Party a hostile party to Jews and Christians. Pope Leo is political not naive.

  2. This is a sad day for Christians everywhere – that the head of the Catholic church would suggest that we worship the same God. Muslims do not worship the Lord Jesus Christ so how can we be on the same page at all? They call Him “a prophet” and nothing more. Of course we can work towards a peaceful coexistence – in that I can appreciate the Pope’s heart. Yet we can’t condone a false peace by blurring the distinction that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh who lived, died, rose again, and ascended to heaven. We cannot deny the Triune nature of the Godhead. This is something that Muslims view as heretical. Catholics would do well to ask Protestants for help in this area. They ought not think that the Vatican itself cannot one day look like the Hagia Sophia or the Dome of the Rock – or numerous other ancient Christian churches.

    1. Muslims coexist just long enough to get the other hand and then they take you over. Doing business in the past years I’ve only met a few that are not ruthless people.

  3. Does he have anything to say about how much larger the Christian population in Lebanon was 50 years ago, and what has happened to them?

  4. While visiting Jerusalem in the late 1990’s my husband and I visited the Dome on the Rock, where there are writings on the ceiling that basically say “God has no children, referring to Jesus Christ”. Muslims do not accept our belief, Christians are infidels to them. They can lie, cheat, kill all of us with no remorse. They follow a leader who offers us to convert or die by the sword. Of course their are moderate Muslims, but their religion is built on believe or die. As Catholics we can pray for them, just don’t be fooled either. Pope Leo, not sure about him yet, I tend to agree he is being way to political, worry about our faith and how to bring Catholics to become stronger in faith not division. Just my 2 cents:)

  5. Yesterday was the Feast of the Holy Trinity in Catholicism. At the Catholic church I attended in northern CA, the priest made a point of criticizing Muslims for not believing in the Trinity and for worshipping a “punishing” God. The language this priest used to describe the Muslim faith was something like “follow these precepts, or you will be damned/punished.” He was drawing a contrast between his understanding of the God Muslims worship and the one we Catholics worship: a forgiving God, by virtue of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. I was kind of stunned to hear this in 2026 from a mainstream Catholic priest. My mind went to the example of Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City, a self-proclaimed Muslim, one of the few New York mayors in recent history who has set the needs of the working class above those of the millionaires and billionaires. While citing former New York city Mayor, Fiorello La Guardia, 1934-1945, as a source of inspiration, Mamdani has lifted up the economic needs of the working class and created an agenda which responds to these needs….rental housing reform and availability, potentially free public transportation and government supported childcare. It is hard for me to cite another political agenda that goes further to advance the needs of the millions of working-class residents of New York city.

I also thought about the Jewish people and how they, like the Muslims, acknowledge only an Old Testament God…..a God who one could easily cite as a wrathful and punishing God for those who did not obey….and yet, the priest made no mention of the Jewish faithful in his criticisms…..one does not have to look far in the Middle East to see how faith in this kind of righteous, Old Testament God has allowed extremist Jewish leaders to justify horrific crimes against humanity in nearby Muslim communities…..

If I find that I am missing something in my current appreciation of my Muslim brothers and sisters, I will happily admit it but for the moment, I have to wonder whether Pope Leo is promoting a new day for Catholic Christians in our appreciation of other major world religions. A day that might bring about more understanding and more peace.

    1. Patricia, Peace? I believe in loving each person by that person’s heart, not Skin color, religion, or the way someone parts there hair. But let’s be real for a minute..the difference between Christians, Jews, and Muslims is obvious. The Koran teaches that if a non believer ” infadel” does not reject there believe and accept Islam they are to be exterminated…Christians & Jews do not kill you if you don’t accept there believes. I know this sounds far fetched to some, but thats because we are not under sharia law YET. So that doesn’t happen yet..as far as socialism in New York? Give it time, socialism always starts out great for many when the few pay for it….but when the check book runs out of cash and your left with blank checks, that is when the show begins. Or better yet ends. I not saying be rude or not to love Muslims, Im saying be aware of what’s going on in France, England, and most of Europe. This time a vast Ocean called the Atlantic is not going to slow this Movement down…it’s already here in NY, Chicago, Portland, Seattle..and as far as the Pope goes pray for him. The timing of an American pope now kind of seems odd after all these years of pope’s, back to back Popes from the America? I have to wonder. I like Pope Leo, and I think he means well, but Im keeping my eyes on events that make me think there’s a Global agenda and we aren’t in its plans. Sorry that reality. I guess prayers and researching who you vote for and are the Candidates in line with Original Catholic teaching is the answer.
