Catholics around the world are being urged to join Pope Leo XIV in prayer following what he has called “very serious news” about Israel’s bombing in Doha, Qatar. The airstrike reportedly targeted Hamas leaders but also struck several residential buildings, heightening fears of a wider escalation in the Middle East.
Speaking briefly to journalists outside the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo before returning to the Vatican, Pope Leo shared his deep concern for the region: “The whole situation is truly serious,” he said, according to Vatican News. “We don’t know where things are headed. It’s always serious. We must pray a lot and keep working, searching, insisting on peace.”

The Pope’s comments came as Israel issued a new evacuation order for residents of Gaza City ahead of potential intensified military operations. The Holy Father revealed that he had personally tried to reach out to the Catholic community in Gaza. “I tried to call the parish priest just now; I have no news,” he said, referring to Father Gabriel Romanelli of the Holy Family Parish. “They were certainly okay before, but after this new order, I’m not sure” (Vatican News).
The Pope had spent Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning in Castel Gandolfo, where he carried out his regular activities before making the return journey to the Vatican. Crowds gathered at the Villa Barberini gates to greet him, and the Pope paused to bless those present.
For Catholics, the Pope’s words serve as a reminder to turn to prayer and to work actively for peace. In times of war and uncertainty, the Church calls on the faithful to unite in solidarity, praying for those caught in conflict and for world leaders to seek just and lasting solutions.
