Who was St. Carlo Acutis?

(Vatican Media)

St. Carlo Acutis (1991–2006) is one of the Church’s most inspiring modern saints, showing the world what holiness can look like in the 21st century. Born in London and raised in Milan, Carlo was an ordinary teenager who lived an extraordinary faith. He loved playing soccer, spending time with friends, and learning computer programming. Yet what set him apart was his deep devotion to the Eucharist and his desire to use every moment of his short life for God.

Carlo attended daily Mass from a young age, prayed the Rosary faithfully, and spent time in Eucharistic Adoration. He famously called the Eucharist his “highway to heaven” and said that when we sit before Jesus in the tabernacle, we become like plants placed in the sun — we begin to grow. Using his gift for technology, he created a website cataloguing Eucharistic miracles from around the world, hoping to lead others closer to Christ.

At just 15 years old, Carlo was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. He accepted his suffering with remarkable peace, offering it for the Church and for the pope. Before he died, he said, “I am happy to die because I lived my life without wasting a minute on things that do not please God.” Carlo was beatified in 2020, and on September 7, 2025, Pope Leo XIV canonized him a saint.

St. Carlo’s life reminds us that holiness is possible for everyone, even in our digital age. His example encourages young people and adults alike to make Jesus the center of their lives and to use their talents to serve the Church.
