Pope Leo XIV Prays for Madagascar After Deadly Cyclones, Extends Lunar New Year Blessings

Pope Leo XIV on Sunday expressed heartfelt solidarity with the people of Madagascar following two devastating cyclones that have left communities reeling and thousands displaced.

After praying the Angelus, the Holy Father turned his attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the island nation. “I pray for the victims and their families, and for all those who have suffered serious damage,” he said, according to Vatican News.

Cyclones Gezani and Fytia struck Madagascar within a short span of time during what has been described as an intense cyclone season in the Southwest Indian Ocean. According to Vatican News, Gezani made landfall on February 10, affecting approximately 270,000 people and displacing thousands. National authorities have reported at least 40 deaths.

Madagascar has declared a national emergency and appealed for international aid. As Vatican News reports, the country’s resources — along with support from the United Nations and other partners — have been directed toward search and rescue operations, evacuations, emergency shelter, and food assistance for those in need.

In the face of such suffering, the Pope’s words served as a reminder of the Church’s closeness to those enduring hardship. His prayer underscores the Catholic call to solidarity, especially with nations facing natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.

The Holy Father also looked beyond the immediate crisis to acknowledge a moment of joy for millions around the world. With Lunar New Year being celebrated on February 17, he noted that billions in East Asia and other parts of the globe are preparing to mark the occasion.

He expressed hope that “this joyful feast” would encourage “more intense family relationships and friendships; may it bring serenity to homes and to society; and may it be an opportunity to look to the future together, building peace and prosperity for all peoples,” according to Vatican News.

Before concluding, Pope Leo extended his good wishes and affection to all celebrating, invoking God’s blessing upon them.

In prayer for the suffering and in hope for renewed unity and peace, the Holy Father’s Angelus message reflected both the pain and promise present in our world, calling the faithful to compassion, generosity, and trust in God’s providence.
