As war in Gaza enters another deadly phase, the people of the Holy Land face renewed uncertainty. Israeli leaders are weighing a cease-fire proposal that could bring the release of hostages, even as military officials prepare an operation in Gaza City.
The New York Times reports that “troops had reached the city’s outskirts” and that tents are already being moved into southern Gaza for civilians who will be displaced. The planned push, described by one Israeli military official as “gradual, precise and targeted,” aims to strike Hamas strongholds that remain in the city.

Yet the possibility of a 60-day cease-fire — recently endorsed by Hamas through Qatari and Egyptian mediators — has stirred fierce debate in Israel. According to the New York Times, officials familiar with the deal say it “would neither immediately release all the Israeli hostages nor end the war,” leading hard-line members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition to resist. Orit Strock, a minister from the Religious Zionism party, warned that prioritizing hostages could “push the country into a horrible abyss.”
Families of the hostages, however, have publicly urged acceptance. “Approving plans to occupy Gaza, while there is a deal on the table…is a stab to the heart of families and the public in Israel,” their representative group said in a statement quoted by the New York Times.
Meanwhile, the suffering continues on the ground. Gaza’s Civil Defense reported multiple deaths in overnight strikes, and the Gazan health ministry says more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since the October 7 Hamas attacks, though the figures do not distinguish between civilians and militants.
For Catholics, the Gospel command to protect life and seek peace stands as a clear lens. The Church insists that “peace is the work of justice and the effect of charity” (CCC 2304). In this moment, both Israeli and Palestinian families cry out for justice — whether in the return of loved ones, protection from bombardment, or relief from hunger and displacement.
The faithful are invited to pray for wisdom among leaders, courage for peacemakers, and mercy for those who mourn. In a land where Christ Himself once walked, every death is a wound to human dignity, and every step toward peace is a step toward the reconciliation God desires for His children.
