Cuba has announced that 51 prisoners will be released in the coming days, a decision linked to discussions with the Holy See and the approaching celebration of Holy Week.
According to Vatican News, Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni confirmed that conversations recently took place between Vatican officials and Cuban authorities regarding the possibility of freeing inmates. Bruni told journalists that there have been discussions “regarding the release of prisoners” in the Caribbean nation.
The Cuban government said the decision was made in a spirit of cooperation with the Vatican and reflects the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two states. In an official statement, Cuban authorities explained the move was taken “in a spirit of goodwill and of the close and fluid relations between the Cuban State and the Vatican – relations through which communication has historically been maintained regarding review processes and the release of persons deprived of liberty,” according to Vatican News.

Officials said those being released have already served a substantial portion of their sentences and demonstrated good conduct while incarcerated. The government stated that the group consists of inmates who have served “a significant part of their sentence and have maintained good behaviour in prison,” according to Vatican News.
The release also follows a broader pattern within Cuba’s justice system. Government authorities noted that since 2010, more than 9,900 prisoners have received pardons. In addition, “over the last three years, as part of Cuban practice and in accordance with the legislative provisions, another 10,000 people serving prison sentences have been released through various forms of legal benefits,” according to Vatican News.
Cuban officials indicated that humanitarian considerations often accompany these types of decisions, especially during major religious observances. The government described the release as consistent with past practice and said it reflects “the humanitarian trajectory of the Revolution,” according to Vatican News.
This year, the decision coincides with the upcoming celebration of Holy Week, the most sacred period in the Christian calendar. For Catholics around the world, Holy Week commemorates the Passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and is often marked by reflection, reconciliation, and acts of mercy.
The Holy See has historically played a quiet but important role in humanitarian negotiations, including prisoner releases and diplomatic mediation. Engagement between the Vatican and Cuba has taken place for decades, particularly in areas involving humanitarian concerns and the wellbeing of prisoners.
The release of the 51 inmates ahead of Holy Week is being viewed as a gesture that reflects both diplomatic dialogue and the spiritual themes of mercy and forgiveness central to the season.
