Canada’s New ‘Combatting Hate Act’ Sparks Alarm Among Christians and Catholic Leaders

A newly passed bill in Canada is raising serious concerns among pro-life advocates and Catholic leaders, who warn it could threaten religious freedom and open the door to persecution.

According to LifeSiteNews, Bill C-9—referred to as the “Combatting Hate Act”—was approved in the House of Commons earlier this week by a vote of 186–137. The legislation received support from Liberal Party and Bloc Québécois members, while Conservatives, NDP, and Green Party MPs opposed it in a rare show of unity.

The pro-life organization Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) has issued a stark warning about the implications of the bill. In comments to LifeSiteNews, CLC campaigns manager David Cooke cautioned that Christians and pro-life advocates could soon face increased hostility.

“With the passage of Bill C-9 in the House, Christians and pro-life advocates will almost certainly face an entirely new level of hostility, as the door swings open to actual persecution under a cloak of supposed legality,” Cooke said, according to LifeSiteNews.

Cooke, who also serves as a Christian pastor, urged believers to remain spiritually grounded, saying, “We must prepare for the battle ahead,” and calling on Canadians to “commit ourselves afresh to the One who has won the ultimate victory over every foe, demonstrated by His resurrection on that first Easter morning,” according to LifeSiteNews.

Political leaders have also voiced strong reactions. Former Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer described the bill’s passage as a “Dark Day” for Canada, according to LifeSiteNews.

Further concerns were raised by Jack Fonseca, CLC’s director of political operations, who emphasized that the fight for religious freedom is not over. “The battle to defend religious freedom in Canada has now moved to the Senate,” he said, warning that recent appointments could influence the bill’s future. Fonseca added that Christians should take action both publicly and spiritually, encouraging prayer, fasting, and civic engagement.

The controversy surrounding Bill C-9 intensified after a religious exemption was removed from the legislation. According to LifeSiteNews, this amendment has drawn criticism from constitutional experts and Catholic leaders alike, who fear it could allow authorities to penalize individuals for expressions of belief deemed “hateful.”

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has also spoken out, issuing an open letter condemning the removal of the religious exemption and calling for its repeal, according to LifeSiteNews.

As the bill now heads to the Senate, many faithful Catholics and Christians across Canada are watching closely, concerned about how the law may affect their ability to live out and publicly express their beliefs.
