The Vatican has announced a yearlong series of spiritual, cultural, and technological initiatives to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the dedication of St. Peter’s Basilica, a milestone that will invite the faithful around the world to rediscover the heart of the Church.
According to Vatican News, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, presented the upcoming plans during a press conference at the Holy See Press Office. The commemorative year will open on February 20 with the inauguration of a new Via Crucis and conclude on November 18 with a Holy Mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV.
At the center of the anniversary is a renewed focus on spiritual life. Cardinal Gambetti emphasized that the celebration is not simply historical remembrance, but, as he explained, “bringing back to the heart” what gives life and hope.

To foster prayer and reflection, the Basilica will host weekly “Spiritual Elevations” featuring sacred music and prayer, along with pastoral lectures and scriptural reflections dedicated to Saint Peter. Pilgrims will also be invited to take part in a special route in Rome retracing the footsteps of Saints Peter and Paul, and a theatrical performance is planned near the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, according to Vatican News.
The anniversary year will also introduce new tools to serve the growing number of international pilgrims. A multilingual liturgical platform developed in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication and Translated will provide real-time AI-assisted translations of major celebrations. According to Vatican News, the service will allow visitors to scan QR codes throughout the Basilica to access audio and text translations directly on their smartphones, without the need to download special applications. The system relies on the live interpreting capabilities of Lara, an artificial intelligence platform developed by Translated.
Several areas of the Basilica complex that were previously inaccessible will now be opened to the public. These include the full terrace with its three fan-shaped sections and the Octagonal Halls, which house architectural models by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Michelangelo’s Dome, along with works from the Basilica’s museum archive, according to Vatican News. A new booking system called Smart Pass will help regulate visitor flow while preserving the sacred atmosphere of the site.
In addition to enhancing pilgrim access, Vatican officials unveiled “Beyond the Visible,” a joint initiative between the Fabric of Saint Peter and the Italian energy company Eni. According to Vatican News, the project will ensure the structural stability of the Basilica through integrated and permanent monitoring systems.
The Vatican also announced the release of a new institutional font named “Michelangelus,” inspired by the handwriting of Michelangelo Buonarroti and developed by Studio Gusto. According to Vatican News, the font will be included in the Microsoft Office package.
Reflecting on the long history of the Basilica, Cardinal Gambetti noted that while Pope Julius II once rebuilt St. Peter’s to renew it, today renewal can take place without demolition. Modern technologies, he reassured, will help ensure that St. Peter’s Basilica continues to welcome pilgrims for centuries to come.
Four centuries after its dedication, the great Basilica remains not only an architectural masterpiece, but a living sign of faith — a place where generations of Catholics have come to pray at the tomb of the Apostle Peter and entrust their hopes to Christ.
