The Vatican has unveiled a sweeping liturgical schedule for Pope Leo XIV that reflects both the global reach of his papacy and the spiritual priorities at the heart of the Church. From international journeys to major feast day celebrations, the months ahead reveal a pastor deeply engaged with the faithful across continents.
According to Vatican News, the Holy Father’s calendar from April through July 2026 includes “two international journeys and two ordinations,” marking a season rich in both missionary outreach and sacramental life.
The Pope’s travels begin with a significant apostolic journey to Africa from April 13–23. This ten-day visit will take him to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. It will be his first visit to the African continent since his election, though his ties to the region run deep. According to Vatican News, he has previously visited Kenya “at least six times” and Tanzania “around five times,” underscoring a long-standing pastoral connection to the people of Africa.
Back in Rome, the Holy Father will preside over a major moment in the life of the Church on April 26, celebrating Mass with priestly ordinations at St. Peter’s Basilica. Eight men from the Diocese of Rome will be ordained on what is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday.
The month of May continues with a focus on episcopal leadership and Marian devotion. On May 2, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass with episcopal ordinations at the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Just days later, on May 8, he will mark the first anniversary of his election with a visit to the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii. During this visit, he will celebrate Mass and recite the Supplication prayer, a powerful expression of trust in Our Lady’s intercession.
Later in the month, the Church will gather for one of its most important solemnities. On May 24, the Holy Father will preside over Mass for Pentecost Sunday at St. Peter’s Basilica, celebrating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church.
June brings another major international journey, this time to Spain. From June 6–12, Pope Leo XIV will visit Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. A highlight of this trip will be the inauguration of the newest and tallest tower of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, a moment that unites faith, art, and history in one of the world’s most iconic Catholic landmarks.
Shortly after returning to Italy, the Pope will travel to Pavia on June 20, where he will pray Vespers in a city closely linked to St. Augustine of Hippo. His relics are housed in the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro, making the visit especially meaningful given Pope Leo’s Augustinian roots.
The month concludes with the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, when the Pope will preside over Mass and bestow the pallium upon new metropolitan archbishops—a powerful sign of unity with the See of Peter.
Finally, on July 4, Pope Leo XIV will travel to the island of Lampedusa, where he will celebrate Mass in a place that has become a symbol of migration and human dignity. This pastoral visit highlights the Church’s continued concern for migrants and refugees, many of whom pass through the island seeking safety and hope.
In all, the Holy Father’s schedule reveals a shepherd committed not only to the liturgical life of the Church, but also to its mission in a world marked by both beauty and suffering. Through ordinations, solemn celebrations, and journeys to the peripheries, Pope Leo XIV continues to guide the faithful with a global vision rooted in the Gospel.
