A group of American Catholics has begun a crowdfunding effort to create a new papal tiara for Pope Leo XIV, seeking to honor the historic election of the first pope from the United States with a gift rooted in Catholic tradition.
The initiative is being organized by the newly established nonprofit Amici Vaticani, which plans to design and present a traditional three-crown papal tiara incorporating both Catholic symbolism and elements reflecting the pope’s American heritage.
Isaac Smith, founder of Amici Vaticani, explained that the effort follows a long-standing custom in the Church. “Historically, the majority of papal tiaras are gifts, usually from the home diocese of the pope or from religious [communities] they may be affiliated with,” Smith said in an interview with EWTN News, according to LifeSiteNews.
The idea emerged following the election of Pope Leo XIV, which Smith described as a moment of particular significance for Catholics in the United States. He noted that the election of the first American pope represents “such a historical milestone” for Americans, according to LifeSiteNews.

The proposed tiara would retain the traditional three-crown design historically associated with the papacy. Amici Vaticani plans to construct the piece from sterling silver with gold-plated crowns and decorate it with red, white, and blue stones in recognition of the pope’s American background.
Additional design elements would reflect both Catholic symbolism and aspects of American identity. According to LifeSiteNews, the tiara would include oak leaves and corn stalks—symbols of the United States’ national tree and crop—as well as roses, which symbolize the Virgin Mary and are also the national flower of the United States. Olive branches are also planned as a symbol of peace and a reference to imagery found on the Great Seal of the United States.
Smith said the design aims to maintain a balance between tradition and cultural identity. The project is intended to be “elegant and traditional” while also seeking to “incorporate distinctively American elements,” he said, according to LifeSiteNews.
Organizers hope the tiara can be funded through many small donations so that the gift represents the collective devotion of American Catholics. Smith said the goal is for the tiara to be presented to the Holy Father during a future visit to the United States.
He also expressed hope that the finished piece would ultimately be displayed in a place of honor in the Vatican.
The papal tiara holds a long and complex place in Church history. According to historical records cited by LifeSiteNews, references to the tiara date back to at least the eighth century, with the term itself appearing in the twelfth century. Over time, additional crowns were added, and by the fourteenth century the now-familiar three-tiered design had emerged.
The triple crown has often been interpreted as symbolizing the threefold office of Christ—Prophet, Priest, and King—or representing the Church Militant on earth, the Church Suffering in purgatory, and the Church Triumphant in heaven.
Despite its historical significance, the tiara has not been worn by a pope for decades. Pope Paul VI was the last pontiff to be crowned with the papal tiara on June 30, 1963. The following year, during the Second Vatican Council, he placed the tiara on the altar in a symbolic gesture. According to LifeSiteNews, the tiara was later sold, with the proceeds donated to aid people in need.
Since then, newly elected popes have chosen not to wear the traditional crown.
Some Catholics have criticized the abandonment of the papal tiara as part of what they see as a broader loss of traditional symbols within the Church following the Second Vatican Council, according to LifeSiteNews.
Even if the new tiara is completed and presented to Pope Leo XIV, it is widely expected that it would likely serve as a ceremonial or historical gift rather than something the pope would wear publicly.
Nevertheless, supporters of the initiative hope the project will celebrate both the history of the papacy and the unique moment represented by the election of an American pope.
