Has the Bermuda Triangle Finally Been Explained?

For generations, stories of the Bermuda Triangle have stirred the imagination. Stretching between Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, this section of the Atlantic has been tied to tales of vanished ships and aircraft, fueling theories about UFOs, portals, and curses. But according to recent scientific insights, the truth may be far less mystical—yet still awe-inspiring when seen through the eyes of faith.

Dr. Simon Boxall, an oceanographer at the University of Southampton, told The Daily Mail that the mystery can be explained by the science of “rogue waves.” He described these as “unpredictable walls of water that can reach twice the height of the surrounding waves,” sometimes as tall as 100 feet (30 meters) (Daily Mail). These towering swells, also called freak or killer waves, are so powerful that they can “sink [a ship] in a matter of two or three minutes” (Daily Mail).

One of the most famous disappearances was that of the USS Cyclops in 1918. The 542-foot vessel, carrying 306 crew, vanished without a distress signal. While conspiracy theories have flourished for more than a century, Dr. Boxall explained that “a rogue wave can be so steep that it can suspend a ship between its peaks… it will ‘snap in two’” (Daily Mail).

The U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also pointed out that accidents in the region are not more frequent than in any other heavily traveled ocean route. “There is no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur with any greater frequency in the Bermuda Triangle than in any other large, well-travelled area of the ocean” (Daily Mail, citing NOAA).

For Catholics, the fascination with places like the Bermuda Triangle is more than curiosity. It raises questions about how God’s creation—so beautiful and vast—can also be unpredictable and dangerous. Psalm 107 reminds us: “They saw the works of the Lord, his wondrous deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves” (Psalm 107:24-25). Just as rogue waves remind us of the raw power hidden within the seas, Scripture reminds us that God alone commands the oceans.

Rather than looking for supernatural portals or aliens, these discoveries call us back to the mystery of creation itself. The ocean is not merely a backdrop for human adventure; it is a place where the majesty and power of God are revealed, sometimes in ways that humble us.

As Dr. Boxall put it, “They are steep, they are high—we’ve measured waves in excess of 30 metres” (Daily Mail). In other words, what appears to be unexplainable is often part of the natural order. For people of faith, that natural order still bears the mark of the Creator, who has “set a limit they cannot pass” (Psalm 104:9).

The Bermuda Triangle may no longer be a supernatural puzzle, but it remains a reminder of humanity’s smallness before God’s creation—and the need to entrust every voyage, and every life, to His care.
