Reports, from LifeNews, that the University of Oregon plans to begin distributing the abortion pill directly from its campus health center in 2026 should deeply trouble anyone who believes in the dignity of human life and the wellbeing of women.
From a Catholic perspective, this policy is not progress. It is a tragic step backward.
We are told that offering abortion pills on campus is about “access” and “empowerment.” But what kind of empowerment tells a young woman that the solution to an unexpected pregnancy is to quietly end the life growing inside her — alone in a dorm room?
True empowerment does not ask women to destroy their own children in order to succeed.
Our Important Lenten Message – Please Watch
For centuries, the Catholic Church has taught that every human life is sacred from the moment of conception. A child in the womb is not a political talking point or a medical inconvenience — he or she is a person made in the image of God. The abortion pill intentionally ends that life.
But the tragedy does not stop there.
Chemical abortions often leave women physically and emotionally isolated. Unlike surgical procedures done in hospitals, abortion pills send women back to their homes — or dorm rooms — to experience intense cramping, heavy bleeding, and the trauma of passing the remains of their unborn child. Many women report profound emotional distress afterward, something rarely discussed by those promoting the drug.
Is this really healthcare?
Universities should be places that support students through life’s challenges — not institutions that quietly push them toward eliminating their children. When abortion becomes the easiest and most convenient option, it creates pressure rather than freedom. A struggling student may feel she has no real choice.
Instead of offering abortion pills, colleges should be expanding resources for pregnant and parenting students: childcare support, housing assistance, counseling, and academic flexibility. Women should never be made to feel that motherhood is incompatible with education or success.
The Catholic faith reminds us that both mother and child possess equal dignity. A compassionate society does not ask one to die so the other can move forward.
Young women deserve better than abortion.
They deserve support, hope, and the reassurance that their lives — and the lives of their children — have immeasurable value.
And every unborn child deserves the chance to live.
