Missouri Sues Planned Parenthood for Claiming the Abortion Pill Is Safer than Tylenol

In a bold legal move, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has filed suit against Planned Parenthood Federation of America, accusing the organization of systematically misleading women about the safety of the abortion pill, mifepristone. The lawsuit centers on Planned Parenthood’s claim that mifepristone is “safer than many other medicines like penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra”—a claim Missouri contends is both dangerous and deceptive

Under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act, which prohibits false advertising and unfair business practices, the state is seeking nearly $2 million in penalties, as well as individual damages of up to $1,000 per woman served in Missouri over the past five years. In addition, the suit demands restitution for Medicaid-paid emergency care resulting from complications related to the abortion pill.

The state’s position is grounded in data. FDA labeling reportedly indicates that up to 4.6% of women taking mifepristone visit emergency rooms–while newer peer-reviewed studies suggest serious adverse events in as many as 10 to 11% of cases. Planned Parenthood rebutted the lawsuit as “meritless,” defending mifepristone as “safe, effective,” and widely used for over two decades.

A Catholic Reflection on Truth, Dignity, and Women’s Health

From a Catholic standpoint, this lawsuit represents more than a legal battle—it embodies the pursuit of truth in advertising, the protection of women’s dignity, and moral consistency in healthcare.

1. Truth Above All
Scripture teaches that “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). When a healthcare provider portrays a powerful and potentially hazardous drug as equivalent in safety to Tylenol, it distorts reality—and endangers the well-being of sisters made in the image of God.

2. Respecting the Body’s Sacredness
The Church insists that women’s health must be honored, not exploited. By allegedly downplaying the risks of chemical abortion to cut costs and increase revenue, Planned Parenthood may be subordinating genuine care to corporate interests—a troubling moral calculus.

3. Accountability and Justice
Catholic social teaching calls for just practices in commerce and medicine. Holding organizations accountable under consumer-protection laws reflects our belief that no entity, regardless of mission, should operate free from moral or civil accountability. Missouri’s suit is an effort to ensure that commercial conduct aligns with legal and moral norms.

Why This Matters Now

With increasing reliance on medication abortions, especially in states where in-person services are restricted, the risks inherent in chemical abortion are magnified. What was once a niche medical procedure now comprises the majority of abortions in America. if women take dangerous medications under false assurances, the pastoral and ethical implications are dire.

The Church affirms that women deserve accurate information, compassionate medical care, and trust in healthcare institutions—not marketing spin or pressure.

Final Thoughts

Missouri’s action is more than a courtroom drama—it’s a clarion call for honesty, justice, and the safeguarding of women’s lives and health. Catholics are called to support truth, advocate for respectful care, and trust in the dignity of each human person. In this moment, we stand with those demanding integrity and compassion in healthcare policy and practice.
