Lent is already halfway over.
Somehow, the forty days that seemed so long on Ash Wednesday are now slipping through our fingers. And yet, instead of quiet reflection and prayerful calm, the world feels louder, heavier, and more frightening by the day.
War headlines fill the news. A growing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran threatens to spread across the Middle East, raising fears of global instability and economic shock.
Political tensions are boiling. Protests erupt in cities. Scandals and investigations dominate conversations. Every day seems to bring another crisis.
And in the middle of all of this… it’s Lent.
It can feel almost strange.
Lent is supposed to be a season of quiet repentance, fasting, prayer, and reflection. Yet instead of silence, our world feels filled with noise and fear.
And if we’re honest, many of us are asking the same question:
How are we supposed to focus on Lent when everything around us feels like it’s falling apart?
Lent Was Never Meant to Happen in Peaceful Times
It may surprise us, but Lent was never designed for calm and comfortable seasons.
The very events we prepare for during Lent — the Passion and death of Christ — happened during a time of political chaos, fear, and injustice.
Jerusalem was under Roman occupation.
Religious leaders were divided and anxious.
Violence and corruption filled the public sphere.
Sound familiar?
Yet in the middle of that broken world, Jesus walked steadily toward the Cross. He did not wait for the world to calm down before saving it.
The Temptation of Fear
When the world feels unstable, fear becomes very tempting. Fear pulls our attention away from God and fixes it on headlines. Fear tells us everything is out of control. Fear convinces us that darkness is winning.
But Lent calls us to something completely different. Lent calls us to trust. It reminds us that even when the world appears chaotic, God is still guiding history.
Even when evil seems loud, Christ has already conquered sin and death.
Compassion Without Losing Our Peace
Being faithful during Lent does not mean ignoring the suffering of the world. Christians are not called to indifference.
We should feel sorrow for war.
We should pray for those facing violence.
We should care deeply about injustice and suffering.
But there is a difference between compassion and despair.
Compassion leads us to prayer. Despair leads us to panic.
The Christian response to a broken world has never been fear — it has always been intercession.
This Is Exactly Why Lent Exists
Perhaps the reason Lent feels so important this year is because the world is so unsettled. When everything feels unstable, the Church calls us to do three simple things:
Pray.
Fast.
Give.
These are not small acts.
Prayer invites God into the world’s suffering.
Fasting detaches us from fear and self-centeredness.
Charity brings Christ’s love into real human pain.
In other words, Lent trains us to respond to chaos with holiness.
The Cross Is the Answer to a Broken World
When we look at the Cross, we see something extraordinary.
On Good Friday, everything looked lost.
The Son of God was condemned.
Violence triumphed.
Truth seemed defeated.
But what looked like the darkest moment in history was actually the moment of redemption. God often works through moments that look like disaster. And that truth should give us tremendous hope.
A Different Way to Live This Lent
Instead of letting fear take over, maybe this Lent we should try something radical.
Less scrolling.
More prayer.
Less anxiety about the world.
More trust in God’s providence.
Less arguing online.
More silence before the Blessed Sacrament.
Because the truth is this: The world has always been broken. But Christ has already overcome the world.
A Prayer for the Rest of Lent
Lord Jesus Christ,
when the world feels heavy and uncertain,
help us to fix our eyes on You.
Give us the grace to fast from fear,
to pray with deeper trust,
and to love those who are suffering.
In the middle of war, conflict, and confusion,
make our hearts places of peace.
Teach us to walk the rest of this Lenten journey
with courage, faith, and hope.
Amen.
