Pope Leo XIV’s Palm Sunday Warning: Christ Rejects War and Ignores Violent Prayers

(Vatican Media)

On Palm Sunday, Pope Leo XIV led the faithful in St. Peter’s Square, offering a powerful reflection on Christ as the true King of Peace in a world marked by violence and war.

In his homily, the Holy Father pointed to Jesus’ unwavering gentleness even as He faced suffering and rejection. “He remains steadfast in meekness, while others are stirring up violence,” the Pope said, emphasizing that Christ’s mission was rooted not in power, but in sacrificial love, according to Vatican News.

The Pope reflected on the Passion of Christ as a journey of peace in the face of brutality. While others took up weapons, Jesus chose surrender and mercy. “He offers Himself to embrace humanity, even as others raise swords and clubs,” he said, highlighting the stark contrast between divine love and human aggression, according to Vatican News.

Recalling the moment in the Gospel when a disciple used violence to defend Him, the Pope noted that Jesus rejected such actions, reminding His followers that those who live by the sword will perish by it. Even in His crucifixion, Christ did not resist but accepted suffering in order to redeem humanity.

“He revealed the gentle face of God, who always rejects violence,” the Pope said. “Rather than saving Himself, He allowed Himself to be nailed to the cross,” according to Vatican News.

Drawing from the prophet Isaiah, the Holy Father delivered one of the most striking lines of his homily, warning that God does not accept prayers rooted in violence. Quoting Scripture, he recalled: “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood.”

He then made the message unmistakably clear: “Jesus is the King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war… He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them,” according to Vatican News.

Turning to the suffering of the modern world, the Pope spoke of the “painful groans” of those afflicted by conflict and oppression. He urged humanity to hear Christ’s cry from the Cross: “God is love! Have mercy! Lay down your weapons! Remember that you are brothers and sisters!”

The Holy Father concluded by invoking the words of Tonino Bello, entrusting the world to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He prayed for a future where war fades, injustice ends, and the tears of those who suffer are wiped away.

As the Church entered Holy Week, the Pope’s message stood as a sobering reminder: true discipleship means rejecting violence, embracing the Cross, and becoming instruments of Christ’s peace in a wounded world.
