As the Church prepares to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Vatican is calling Catholics to approach the coming Jubilee Year with depth, humility, and true conversion of heart.

The special Year of Saint Francis, proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV, will run from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027. During this period, the faithful may receive a plenary indulgence under specific spiritual conditions, as outlined in a decree issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary.

Speaking to Vatican Media, Bishop Krzysztof Nykiel, Regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary, emphasized that indulgences must never be misunderstood as an automatic spiritual reward. According to Vatican News, Bishop Nykiel warned that indulgence is not a “dispenser of graces,” but rather a moment of encounter with God’s mercy.

At its heart, the indulgence offered during the Year of Saint Francis involves the remission of the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As Bishop Nykiel explained, indulgence “makes it possible to free the heart from the burden of sin,” allowing the faithful to carry out spiritual reparation “in full freedom,” according to Vatican News.

To receive the plenary indulgence, Catholics must fulfill the usual conditions established by the Church: sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayers for the intentions of the Pope, and interior detachment from sin. In addition, the decree encourages concrete acts rooted in Franciscan spirituality, including pilgrimages to Franciscan churches, participation in Jubilee celebrations, prayer and meditation inspired by Saint Francis, and daily works of charity and humility.

The Vatican also made special provisions for the sick and elderly. According to Vatican News, those unable to leave their homes may spiritually unite themselves to the Jubilee by offering “their prayers, sufferings, and daily difficulties of life,” with the intention of fulfilling the usual conditions when possible.

Addressing concerns that repeated Jubilee celebrations could lead to spiritual fatigue, Bishop Nykiel urged Catholics to seek depth rather than novelty. “In the life of faith, it is not a matter of a continual ‘more,’ but of a ‘deeper,’” he said, according to Vatican News. He added that without reflection, even profound spiritual moments risk remaining “at the level of emotions.”

Saint Francis, the bishop noted, offers a remedy to superficial faith. Rather than promoting spiritual excess, Francis points to simplicity, consistency, and Gospel-centered living. “He does not propose ‘more practices,’ but simplicity and authenticity,” Bishop Nykiel said, encouraging a return to Scripture, joy in small things, and faith lived through daily relationships, according to Vatican News.

The decree also highlights the requirement of detachment from sin, a condition often misunderstood. Bishop Nykiel clarified that this does not demand sinlessness but an interior rejection of sin itself. Detachment, he explained, is an act of the will that says, “Lord, I want no sin at all, not even the smallest,” according to Vatican News.

Ultimately, Vatican officials stress that indulgence is not a spiritual shortcut but part of an ongoing path of conversion. As Bishop Nykiel stated, indulgence bears fruit when a person opens themselves to God’s transforming grace, allowing Him to heal, forgive, and convert the heart. According to Vatican News, this deeper conversion is the true goal of the Year of Saint Francis.
