St. Mary Magdalene: Apostle to the Apostles and Beloved Disciple of the Risen Lord

Among the many saints venerated by the Catholic Church, St. Mary Magdalene shines as a powerful witness to the mercy of Christ, the hope of redemption, and the joy of the Resurrection. Often misunderstood, Mary Magdalene is not merely a repentant sinner or a supporting figure in the Gospels—she is a disciple chosen by Christ Himself to proclaim the greatest truth in history: “He is risen.”

The Woman Who Was Healed

Mary Magdalene is first introduced in the Gospel of Luke as one “from whom seven demons had gone out” (Luke 8:2). This healing marks the beginning of her new life in Christ. In biblical tradition, the number seven often signifies completeness, suggesting that she had been entirely possessed—utterly bound in suffering—and yet completely healed by the Savior.

From that moment on, Mary Magdalene became one of the faithful women who followed Jesus, supported His ministry, and remained with Him even when others fled. She was present not only during His public ministry but also at His Crucifixion, keeping vigil at the foot of the Cross when the apostles, except for John, had abandoned Him.

Witness of the Cross and the Tomb

It is no small matter that Mary Magdalene stood by Jesus at Calvary. In that hour of agony and apparent defeat, when fear and despair silenced the voices of so many disciples, Mary’s love for Christ was fearless. This steadfast devotion continued into the darkness of Holy Saturday, and into the dawn of Easter morning.

She went to the tomb while it was still dark, carrying the sorrow of the previous day but also the faithfulness that had never left her side. And in that sacred moment of fidelity, she encountered the Risen Christ.

Apostle to the Apostles

In John’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene is the first to see the empty tomb and the first to behold the resurrected Lord (John 20:11–18). In tears and confusion, she did not recognize Him at first, mistaking Him for a gardener. But then came the turning point—Jesus called her by name: “Mary.”

With that one word, her grief was transformed into joy, her confusion into clarity. She recognized Him, and He commissioned her: “Go to my brothers and say to them…” (John 20:17). In that moment, Christ made her the first herald of the Resurrection. For this reason, the Church rightly calls her “Apostolorum Apostola”—the Apostle to the Apostles.

A Model of Discipleship

St. Mary Magdalene’s life offers a profound reflection on the power of grace. She reminds us that no soul is beyond the reach of Christ’s mercy. Her transformation—from demoniac to disciple, from mourner to messenger—is a testimony to the healing love of God.

She is also a model of perseverance in prayer, a heart anchored in Christ, and a voice of evangelization. In her, we see the importance of both contemplative love and apostolic mission. She sought the Lord with tears, listened to Him when He spoke her name, and obeyed His command to go and tell the Good News.

Honoring Her Rightly

For centuries, Mary Magdalene’s identity was sometimes confused with other women in the Gospels—particularly the sinful woman who anointed Jesus’ feet. While tradition often portrayed her as a repentant prostitute, the Gospels themselves do not support this conflation. What is clear, however, is that she was a woman of great courage, fidelity, and love.

In 2016, Pope Francis elevated her liturgical memorial on July 22 to the rank of a feast day, placing her on par with the male apostles and further affirming her unique role in salvation history. In doing so, the Holy Father reminded the Church of the beauty and importance of feminine discipleship and the dignity of women in the life of the Church.

A Saint for Our Time

In a world searching for identity, healing, and hope, Mary Magdalene stands as a luminous guide. To the broken-hearted, she brings comfort. To the fallen, she offers hope. And to all who seek the Lord with sincerity, she is a sign that Christ’s mercy is real and His Resurrection is the final word.

May we, like Mary Magdalene, remain faithful at the foot of the Cross, seek Christ with longing hearts, and boldly proclaim the joy of Easter morning: Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen!
