In a landmark decision, Pope Leo XIV has paved the way to formally proclaim St. John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church, one of the highest honors in Catholic tradition, according to Vatican News.

During an audience on July 31, 2025, with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, the Holy Father “confirmed the affirmative opinion of the Plenary Session of Cardinals and Bishops… regarding the title of Doctor of the Universal Church, which will soon be conferred on Saint John Henry Newman,” Vatican News reports.

When the proclamation is completed, Newman will become the 38th saint to receive this title and only the second Englishman, after St. Bede the Venerable, to be named a Doctor of the Church, according to The Pillar.

An Extraordinary Theologian and Ecumenical Bridge‑Builder

Born in 1801 in London, Newman began his theological career as an Anglican priest and leader of the Oxford Movement. His spiritual journey deepened after an influential trip to Italy in 1832, when he began “to know the depths of God, His ‘kindly Light,’ which for him was also the light of Truth,” according to Vatican News.

His seminal work, An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), explored how Catholic faith develops while preserving its core truths. That same year, Newman entered the Catholic Church, writing that it was “like coming into port after a rough sea; and my happiness on that score remains to this day without interruption,” as reported by Religion News Service.

Heart Speaks to Heart: Writings, Sanctity, and Influence

Canonized in 2019, Newman’s chosen motto was Cor ad cor loquitur—“Heart speaks to heart.” Pope Francis praised him for realizing that “his deepest encounter with himself and with the Lord came not from his reading or reflection, but from his prayerful dialogue, heart to heart, with Christ,” according to Vatican News.

The title of Doctor of the Church is reserved for saints whose theological works “greatly serve the universal Catholic Church,” AP News explains. Newman’s writings have influenced major theological thought, including the Second Vatican Council, and earned him respect as both a scholar and a pastor.

Why This Matters Today

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, called the decision “of huge encouragement to all who appreciate not only his great learning but also his heroic sanctity in following the call of God… as ‘heart speaking unto heart,’” AP News reports.

Observers see Newman as a bridge‑builder for a Church navigating both tradition and renewal, a voice of unity whose reflections on faith continue to inspire Catholics across the globe, according to the National Catholic Register.

Looking Ahead

The formal proclamation date and the Latin title for Newman’s Doctor of the Church designation will be announced by the Dicastery and the Pope’s liturgical office.

Catholics worldwide are preparing to celebrate a thinker whose life, from conversion to canonization, was a journey “from shadows and images into the Truth,” as his tombstone reads.
