Feast Day: August 8

As the Church commemorates the feast of St. Dominic on August 8, we remember a man whose life was wholly given to truth, compassion, and the saving of souls. Founder of the Order of Preachers—known as the Dominicans—St. Dominic was not only a towering figure of his time but a model for all who strive to proclaim the Gospel with both clarity and charity.

Born to a Noble Purpose

Born in Caleruega, Spain, around 1170, Dominic de Guzmán was the son of a noble family, but his heart was never set on wealth or prestige. From an early age, he exhibited a deep love for Scripture and a contemplative spirit. It’s said that during a famine, he sold his valuable books to feed the poor, explaining, “How can I study from dead skins when living people are dying of hunger?”

This compassion would become a hallmark of his life.

The Gospel in Word and Action

At the turn of the 13th century, Dominic encountered a growing heresy in southern France: Albigensianism, which denied the goodness of the material world and the Incarnation. While others fought heresy with force, Dominic chose another way—preaching the truth with humility, poverty, and love.

His method was revolutionary: live simply, speak clearly, and trust in the power of the Word of God. His vision would become the foundation of the Dominican Order, formally approved by Pope Honorius III in 1216. Their mission: to contemplate and to share the fruits of contemplation.

A Saint in Love with the Rosary

St. Dominic is also traditionally associated with the promotion of the Holy Rosary. Though its exact origins are debated, Catholic tradition holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary entrusted the Rosary to Dominic as a spiritual weapon against error and sin. Whether by vision or by practice, Dominic’s deep Marian devotion helped spread the Rosary throughout Christendom as a meditative form of preaching and prayer.

His Legacy Today

Dominic died in Bologna in 1221, but his work continues through the thousands of Dominican friars, sisters, and laypeople who preach, teach, and serve around the world. Canonized just 13 years after his death, St. Dominic’s life stands as a powerful testimony to the urgency of evangelization done with gentleness and intellectual rigor.

A Saint for Our Times

In an age of noise, division, and confusion, St. Dominic reminds us that truth and charity are never opposed. He is a saint for teachers, preachers, and all who seek to bring Christ to a world that hungers for meaning.

On this feast day, may we echo the words often attributed to him:
“I want only to speak of God or to God.”

St. Dominic, pray for us.
