Pope Leo XIV: Young People Need Scripture Where They Actually Live — Online

Pope Leo XIV warned this week that younger generations risk losing sight of the Gospel unless the Church makes Sacred Scripture accessible in the digital world that now shapes their lives.

Meeting with members of the Catholic Biblical Federation, the Holy Father emphasized that the Church’s mission to proclaim the Word of God must adapt so “new generations” can encounter Christ where they spend most of their time.

According to Vatican News, the Pope reflected on the 60th anniversary of Dei Verbum and insisted that its message remains urgent. “‘Easy access to Sacred Scripture should be provided for all the Christian faithful,’” he said, quoting the document. He added that its teaching is “a strong desire, a firm conviction, and a pastoral approach.”

Pope Leo noted that the Church’s proclamation must always be rooted in the Gospel itself. “‘From the Gospel, she continually rediscovers the direction for her journey,’” he said, “under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who teaches all things and reminds us of everything the Son has said,” according to Vatican News.

But he also warned that modern digital culture often buries the Word of God under endless noise. “‘Today, new generations inhabit new digital environments where the Word of God is easily overshadowed,’” he said. Many young people, he added, live in “cultural spaces where the Gospel is unfamiliar or distorted by particular interests.”

The Pope urged biblical scholars and pastoral ministers to ask themselves how the Church can reach those who have never truly encountered Scripture. “‘I hope these questions inspire in you new forms of biblical outreach… so that God’s Word may take root in people’s hearts,’” he said.

He concluded by asking every Christian to become “‘living letters… written not in ink but by the Spirit of the living God,’” bearing witness through daily life.

Digital Mission in Action: Catholic Online School

Pope Leo’s call speaks directly to the mission we live every day at Catholic Online School.
