Pope Leo XIV traveled to Assisi on Wednesday morning, making a reverent visit to the tomb of St. Francis at the start of a day dedicated to meetings with Italy’s bishops. His brief pilgrimage, marked by prayer and reflection, came as the Church prepares to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death.
The Holy Father arrived by helicopter just after dawn, greeting the historic Umbrian hillside from above before entering the city long associated with art, peace, and Christian renewal. According to Vatican News, his first public words of the visit underscored why he chose to begin his day before the saint’s resting place: “It is a blessing to be able to come here today to this sacred place. As we approach the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’s death, we have the opportunity to prepare to celebrate this great, humble, and poor saint at a time when the world is searching for signs of hope.”
Crowds braved cold winds and rain to welcome him into the Lower Basilica. Pilgrims and local faithful greeted him with calls of “Viva il Papa!” as he was met at the entrance by the friars of the community, including the custodian, Fr. Marco Moroni. The Pope was then escorted into the crypt, where the stone walls house the remains of Italy’s beloved patron.
There, Pope Leo paused for a moment of silent prayer. The brief message he offered afterward, broadcast to those waiting outside, echoed his desire for St. Francis’s witness to guide a world facing turmoil and uncertainty. As Vatican News reported, the Pope reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the saint’s example and the hope he continues to inspire eight centuries after his death.
Following the visit, the Holy Father continued on to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where he met with the Italian Episcopal Conference at the close of its 81st General Assembly.
The Church in Italy will soon begin a year of special commemorations honoring St. Francis, whose legacy of humility, joy, and conversion remains deeply woven into Catholic life. Pope Leo’s quiet stop in the crypt served as an early reminder of the spiritual heart of that upcoming anniversary.
